O'Rourke and Masterson lead Carrigallen to glory
by Staff Reporter, Leitrim Observer

Inspired performances from Bronagh O'Rourke and Emer Masterson helped Carrigallen NS overcome the challenge of Drumcong NS in last Monday evening's Cumann na mBunscoil girls Division 2 Final. While Drumcong did very well to remain level with their opponents until half-time, the scoring power of O'Rourke and Masterson ultimately took its toll in the second half and helped Carrigallen run out comfortable winners.

The game was barely a minute old when Drumcong opened the scoring with a well worked goal. Sarah McCormack and Aoife Byrne combined well to create an opportunity for Niamh Timmyns who beat Carrigallen goalkeeper Juliette Lockhart with a well placed shot.

Carrigallen responded well to that early setback and scored a point through Bronagh O'Rourke and came agonisingly close to score a goal of their own but O'Rourke was denied by the Drumcong crossbar. Having opened their account Carrigallen added to their tally with three points from Emer Masterson and a Bronagh O'Rourke point. After Ciara Tivnan and Masterson exchanged points, Drumcong struck for their second goal of the game in the 12th minute after Ciara McNulty passed to Aoife Byrne.

Less than a minute later Aoife Byrne scored her second goal of the game, with Ciara Tivnan this time the provider. Carrigallen finished the half very strongly and scored four unanswered points, two from Shannon O'Rourke and a point apiece from Masterson and O'Rourke to leave the sides level at the interval, 0-10 to 3-1. Although Carrigallen would have been happy with much of their opening half performance they would no doubt have been keen to limit the number of goal scoring opportunities presented to Drumcong.

After Emer Masterson and Aoife Byrne exchanged points in the opening minutes of the second half, Carrigallen began to seize the initiative and started to dominate more and scored five unanswered points with scores coming from Shannon O'Rourke and two points apiece from Bronagh O'Rourke and Emer Masterson. Having established a five point lead, Carrigallen continued to surge forward and further extended their lead with two goals in as many minutes from the lethal partnership of O'Rourke and Masterson.

Drumcong helped bring Carrigallen's scoring spree to a temporary halt as Ciara Tivnan converted two frees, either side of a Bronagh O'Rourke point for Carrigallen. With time running out, Carrigallen struck for their third goal of the game with captain Emer Masterson finding the net for the second time in what was an excellent performance as she led by example throughout. Drumcong scored a late point through Niamh Timmyns which was cancelled out by Bronagh O'Rourke to ensure a comprehensive and deserved victory for Carrigallen.

Carrigallen were deserving victors and the result was one part of a double achieved by the school on Monday evening last in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada.
