Book Launch at Margaret's Cottage
Margaret of New Orleans Committee, Tully South, Carrigallen, extend a warm welcome to Laura D. Kelley of Tulane University, New Orleans, to Margaret's cottage for the launch of her best-selling book "The Irish in New Orleans" on Monday, 29 June 2015 at 7:00pm. This welcome also extends to anyone from abroad visiting the locality to join them for this event. This entertaining and beautiful illustrated book tells the courageous adventures and inspiring stories of the Irish population of New Orleans, America's most exotic city.

The volume also includes a wonderful essay on Margaret of New Orleans which describes her as one of the most famous Irish immigrant women of New Orleans, if not the entire United Sates. The launch will be performed by Dr Hugh Maguire. He is an Architectural Historian by training, from Killeshandra, Co Cavan and graduate of Trinity College, Dublin and the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, Hugh has lectured at the Crawford College of Art, Cork and the University of Otago and the University of Auckland, New Zealand before returning to Ireland to work with the Heritage Council. He has also taught at the University of Ulster. At the Heritage Council he was responsible for the Museums and Archives policy provision, as well as promoting the care and welfare of Ireland's material cultural heritage, and for the roll out of the Council's accreditation programme for the sector – now with some sixty plus institutions across the state.

Since late 2009 he has been the Director of Hunt Museum, Limerick, where he has worked not only on sustaining the collection and venue through recent economic challenges but has increased the diversity and footfall to the venue underpinning its role at the heart of the cultural and heritage life in the city. James Madden RIP
There was widespread sadness in the Carrigallen and surrounding areas when the news spread that James Madden had died peacefully at his residence. James (fondly known as Jimmy), originally born in Gowna, Co Cavan came from a highly known and respected family. He moved to Sessiagh, Carrigallen on marrying Anna Kiernan. They had four of a family, three sons and one daughter. Jimmy was a very industrious farmer and cattle exporter and he had a great interest in all things local. He is survived by his loving wife Anna, daughter Maura; sons James C, Brendan and Enda; sister Kate; grandchildren; nephews; nieces; relatives and friends. Reposed at his residence where a large numbers of people attended to pay their respects before his remains were removed to St Mary's Church on Monday morning for funeral Mass, celebrated by Fr Dennis Murray PP, and con-celebrated by Fr Colin Rothery (friend of the family) and Fr Ultan McGoohan, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age recently went on their first official 'day trip' for 2015 – and where better place to go than Butler's Chocolate Factory in north Dublin! It was an interesting experience, made all the more impressive by us all having to wear white coats and hairnets – we looked all set to do a surgical procedure rather than decorate chocolate elephants! There was no shortage of complimentary chocolates during our stay, which included a guided tour, explanations and demonstrations of all the different stages that take place before those delicious chocolates find their way into the shops. Later in the day we had a guided coach tour of Dublin and surrounding area. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and gave us a potted history of just some of the sites and historical happenings involving places and people of this great city. A really enjoyable day was had by all, ending with dinner at the Lucan Spa Hotel. Our next meeting will be early in June, when we will be planning our next 'nice day out' as well as discussing details of our holiday later in the year.

Representing Ireland
Jack Ledwith, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim a member of the Cavan Canoe Club will represent Ireland at the World Kayake Freestyle Championships in Ottawa, Canada in September this year. His team placement has been no surprise as over the last two year Jack has taken several national titles. We wish him the best of luck in Canada.

Congratulations
Last Thursday night, our own Seamus O'Rourke stepped out on the stage of the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin as the Bishop in John B. Keane's 'The Field' 50th anniversary production. Numerous productions, a few poems and many awards later here he is on the verge of something wonderful. Congratulations and wishing Seamus well! The Field is running until 16 May 2015.

Peter Donohoe RIP
On Wednesday, 18 March 2015, a great sadness descended throughout the parish and indeed many adjoining parishes when the news spread that Peter Donohoe, Kilbracken, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim had passed away following a short illness. Peter a member of a well-known cattle dealing family from Ballymagovern came to Carrigallen in 1967 having married Philomena McCann whose family ran a bar and grocery shop on Main Street, later to become Peter's Inn, happily raising their six children there. Concentrating on the bar business along with a member of guest rooms and funeral undertaking. Early days in auctioneering saw Peter handle sale of farms which often included the sale of livestock and farm machinery along with household effects. Gifted with a sharp wit and good turn of phrase Peter's personality lent itself to public performances as auctions demand and accompanied by his darling wife Philomena doing the books, they soon gained a reputation as a very efficient duo and were in much demand across several counties where dispersal sales or sale of property was required. Property sales saw Peter implement a new dynamic for a rural auctioneer using national media to advertise property; he brought outside interest to local property bringing new investment and higher prices.

Peter started running carnivals when he came to Carrigallen and they continued successfully for almost twenty years which made him a household name across the region. Starting in the late sixties which saw the show band era at full swing, dance goers enjoyed all the big names such as Big Tom, Larry Cunningham, Brian Coll, etc., here in Carrigallen with Peter often boasting he brought hundreds of couples together with entertainment which was affordable and enjoyable. Locals recall the year when an ESB strike threatened the carnival, Peter secured a generator and used RTÉ to announce to all concerned that dancing would continue as usual, thereby putting Carrigallen on the map.

A man before his time in many respects Peter brought class and flair to whatever he was involved in, never afraid to embrace the most modern approach coupled with good old fashioned hard work which laid the foundation for his success. He retired from pub life in 2000 and devoted all of his time to his auctioneering business. In 1999 he was joined by his daughter Olivia after she graduated from Oxford University with a degree in property management and later his son-in-law James Spring who also graduated from Oxford. They expanded the business by opening a REA Peter Donohoe office in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, servicing County Leitrim, North Longford and South West Cavan.

He was passionate about football, a loyal supporter attending matches whenever possible, especially when his native County Cavan was playing. Shortly after him moving here he played with the Junior team lending his experience to the team having played for Kildallon First Ulsters. In 1984 he sponsored The Club Competition Cup for the opening of Carrigallen G.A.A. Park, Easter Sunday, 22 April 1984. Peter was a selector with Carrigallen Senior football club for numerous years.

Sympathy is extended to his dear wife Philomena; son Peter Jnr; daughters Catherine, Yvonne, Audrey, Olivia and Gemma; thirteen grandchildren; sons-in-law; daughter-in-law; sisters; brothers; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nephews; nieces; relatives and friends.

Following his passing which occurred at his residence surrounded by his wife and family, Peter's waking saw extremely large numbers of people paying their respects before his remains were removed to St Mary's Church on Saturday morning for funeral Mass. Again a very large congregation was present. Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Denis Murray PP and con-celebrated by Fr Fintan McKiernan, Fr Dessie Corrigan, Fr Peter McKiernan, Monsignor Charles Travers, Fr Bernard Doyle, Fr John Phair, Fr PJ Corrigan and Fr Tom McKiernan, with burial to the adjoining cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

Ten Years Celebrations
Leitrim Youth Theatre Company Carrigallen performed to a packed audience on Friday night last at the Corn Mill Theatre, two short plays "Fairy Tell Tale" written/directed by Yvonne Heijneman, assisted by Aoife Tierney, and the Senior group performed "Outside the box" written directed by Maura Williamson, the cast, Yvonne Heijneman and Aoife Tierney. This performance was part of LYTC Carrigallen tenth celebrations which will continue to the end of this year.

On behalf of LYTC Carrigallen Maura Williamson, Mary Blake, Yvonne Heijneman, assistant facilitators, past and present, wish to thank everyone for all their help and support over the past ten years. Fourteen productions, current enrolment of seventy youth members and waiting lists, the future of Youth Theatre in Carrigallen in very secure.

No Youth Theatre can work without the locality, trust and belief of funding bodies, Leitrim County Council under the Arts Department, Arts Officers, Arts Council of Ireland, Peace 111 and NAYD. No youth theatre can succeed without committed facilitators, and workers who bring professionalism, passion, genuineness, and heart into the work they do.

I think you all will agree, we owe a thank you to Maura Williamson and her dedicated team for co-ordinating, and keeping LYTC Carrigallen on the map as one of the most active groups in the Country. The programme, containing comments from previous members clearly sums up what youth Theatre meant to them as they moved through college, work, interviews etc.

A massive thank you goes to The Corn Mill Theatre and all their staff, front of house, technical and catering, for their beautiful space, and our home for rehearsals and productions. We are so lucky to have this Theatre on our doorstep.
To all the members who passed through LYTC Carrigallen, hope that you have learned something that you will carry with you for life. To the parents/guardians who have the insight to see the benefits of youth theatre for their sons and daughters, and staying with it, when commitment is needed for production etc.

There are currently very active LYTC groups in Carrick-on-Shannon and Manorhamilton, so three very active youth theatre groups in our Country is a legacy to the tradition that theatre has in Leitrim. Enrolment for new members to LYTC Carrigallen are in September of each year, and can be done by contacting Maura or enquires to Arts Office, Carrick-on-Shannon, The Glens Centre for Manorhamilton, and The Dock for Carrick on Shannon. Our ten years celebrations will continue for 2015 so we look forward to performing here again in late November/December 2015.

Our librarian Helen Corcoran has currently an exhibition of LYTC past achievements in our local library, clips from past plays running etc. Our library is a wonderful source to us all in this community, for research, books, information, administration, photocopy, and home to readers and writers groups. So long may it be with us.

Monsignor Vincent McCabe RIP
The death has occurred of Monsignor Vincent McCabe in Los Angeles, USA. Born in Gortermone, he was the second youngest of eight children of John and Margaret McCabe. He attended Gortermone NS, Latin School, Moyne, Co Longford and St Pat's College, Cavan. He was ordained in Maynooth on 20 June 1946 for the Diocese of Kilmore. With the surplus of Priests at the time he went on temporary mission to Los Angeles until his recall to serve as Curate to Rossinver, Co Leitrim in the winter of 1954. In 1956 the lure of the warm climate of Los Angeles tempted him to seek permission to return to serve out the rest of his mission in Los Angeles Archdiocese in the parishes of Santa Maria, Santa Barbara and Santa Catalina. His work included the building of two new Churches and two new schools.

After his retirement he was Chaplain in a large nursing home in Los Angeles. His home there was often a meeting place for visiting Irish friends. He travelled to Ireland almost every summer, visiting his family and staying at the home of his late brother Foncy and sister in law Margaret in Tully, Carrigallen. Mary Crocker RIP
There was wide spread sadness throughout the parish when the sudden death of Mary Crocker (nee McNaboe) occurred. Mary was born in Bredagh, Carrigallen and seventy four years ago the McNaboe family moved to Beaghbeg, Carrigallen. Mary at a young age went to England to get employment. She worked in Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, Surrey as a ward orderly, caring for very sick children. Following her mother's death she came regularly to maintain the homestead and in the early 80s she and her partner Cyril Fuller decided to make Beaghbeg their home. Mary enjoyed the outdoor life and she and Cyril helped the neighbours with rearing hay, picking potatoes and crops. They also had a very sufficient vegetable plot which kept them in great supply of vegetables along with giving them great satisfaction of growing their own food. Sadly Cyril died many years ago; however Mary continued living in Beaghbeg keeping it as a holiday home for the rest of her brothers and sisters.

Mary was a very witty person, had a good sense of humour, and enjoyed her weekends out, meeting people and her social drink. Although she had a television, she rarely watched it, instead she preferred to read and do cryptic crosswords. She was predeceased by her sisters Elizabeth and Sally and brothers Packie Joe, Jimmy, Danny and Jude. Sympathy is extended to her brother Tommy Carrigallen and sisters Cora and Brigid, England. Removal was to St Marys Church, Carrigallen, followed by funeral mass celebrated by Fr Denis Murray PP, with interment in the adjoining Cemetery.
May she Rest in Peace.

Following two very productive meetings recently, Sergeant Michael Collins met with Chairperson Frankie Greene answering questions and concerns raised in a letter presented to the Superintendent by the Committee concerned anti -social behaviour in our community in recent months. The Dead School
The 2014 RTE All-Ireland Drama Winners return with Pat McCabe's The Dead School, directed by Ronan Ward. With a cast of twenty-six actors, and a play from one of Ireland's internationally renowned writers; Pat McCabe (The Butcher Boy, Breakfast on Pluto), this black comedy will keep audiences enthralled from beginning to end - a rollercoaster from the word go.

Raphael Bell, the old-style national school teacher whose life is haunted by images and memories from his past, has devoted his life to upholding his school's rigorous core curriculum. By the late 1960s, however, parents and students have begun to question Bell's inflexibility on such issues as corporal punishment and mandatory school prayer. Bell attributes all such criticism to the baleful influence of television, rock music, and American movies. His rage finally finds a focus in Malachy Dudgeon, a first-year teacher who seems to embody all the worst features of the counterculture. The two are soon locked in a power struggle that can only end in disaster.

The Corn Mill Theatre Group presents The Dead School by Pat McCabe and directed by Ronan Ward on Thursday 26, Friday 27 February, Sunday 1 March, Wednesday 4 March and Thursday 5 March 2015. This play is not suitable for children. Doors open at 8:00pm and show starts at 8:30pm. Booking at 049 4339612 between 10:00am to 4:00pm or bookings@cornmilltheatre.com

Pancake Tuesday
The Pancake Day fundraiser held in the Carrigallen Vocational School on Tuesday last was an outstanding success with over €1,000 raised for the Oncology Unit at Cavan General Hospital. The event saw pancakes of every shape, size and flavour cooked up by a large number of volunteers, some who brought their recipes from as far away as the USA. It was held in the recently extended refurbished Home Economics room which was made available by kind permission of the Board of Management and school Principal Mr Declan Conboy.

The flipping of pancakes saw mixed results with some casualties been recorded by the youngsters, while the steady hand of the Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council Paddy O'Rourke saw him flip the cake without a single drop. The committee would like to thank all those who helped publicise the event, particularly Clodagh Murray, Gorthhoose, a student at Vocational School who designed an excellent poster for the event.

Tom Mollahan RIP
The area was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Tom Mollahan of Tully which occurred at Cavan General Hospital following a very short illness. Born 59 years ago, an only child to John and Ann (formerly Corrigan), Tom was a quiet man who was liked by all who came in contact with him. Having attended Gotermone National School he went on to the Vocational School where his teachers and fellow students agreed he excelled in many subjects and showed promise of great academic achievement were it not for the fact he quit school early following the untimely and sudden death of his father.

In his early years, Tom played football (which was no surprise given his uncle Pee had founded the famous Tully team along with mentoring and training many other teams) and returned to the field in the late seventies following an absence of a few years and retained a great interest in Gaelic games, following all the action through reports in local papers and radio. Being a keen reader Tom read all the local weekly papers along with argi related magazines and some carefully selected books and perhaps a legacy from early school days was his remarkable style of writing which was often commented on by anyone who had occasion to receive correspondence from him.

Tom's removal to St Mary's church saw a large crowd in attendance despite the inclement weather conditions, while the funeral saw equally large numbers attend where they heard his cousin Shaun Corrigan deliver a very fitting eulogy in which he paid tribute to Tom's neighbours who had helped him especially since the onset of his illness and declaring ''it is not important how many Facebook friends you have but rather how many actually turn up when you need them'' and in this regard Tom was blessed in that he lived in a neighbourhood who cared for him. Fr Murray spoke of Tom's regular attendance at all religious ceremonies, his sincerity and genuine decency and how he accepted his illness despite the apparent cruelty of it. Sympathy is extended to his uncle Pat Corrigan, Drumderglin, Carrigallen, his cousins, relatives and many friends. May he rest in peace.

However, a special sitting of Mohill District Court will be held on 2 May 2015 in the Hunt Hall, Castle Street, Mohill at 9:00pm sharp! The last special sitting of Mohill District Court took place last May 2014 when Judge John James Sharkey presided over Percy French v The West Clare Railway Company. Percy French won his case and was awarded £10 plus expenses. Now the West Clare Railway is counter suing Percy French. Judge John James Sharkey will preside over the case.  It all relates to the song 'Are Ya right there Michael are ya right' which Percy composed after he won his case last May.  The West Clare Railway is suing Percy for Libel and Slander. In the meantime, statements are being taken from various witnesses and they will be examined and cross examined on the day by two very eminent counsels, Mr Bailey and Mr Considine. The Co. Don't Tell the Bride visits Carrigallen
On Wednesday, 10 December 2014, Threase Finnegan, daughter of Martina and Michael Finnegan, Drummerkane, Carrigallen got married in St Mary's Church, Carrigallen after only three weeks of her now husband Matthew's planning of their dream day. The adventure began in September when the young couple seen an advertisement that RTÉ were looking for couples to take part in the television show 'Don't Tell The Bride'. Threase and Matthew applied and after many interviews and meetings, finally found out in the last week of November that they had been accepted for the show. The show involved the couple being given €10,000 for their wedding on the conditions that the groom planned the whole day down to every last detail. Another condition of the show was that the couple had absolutely no contact for the three weeks before the wedding.

Threase and their guests did not find out the wedding date until four days prior to the wedding. The couple enjoyed a unique day with their family and friends and would like to thank them all for helping make their day special. They would like to thank them for their patience as filming inevitably delayed some parts of the day. They would also like to thank Fr D. Murray PP Carrigallen, for his beautiful ceremony and his ability to keep secrets from the Bride herself! The show will be aired at the end of February; however, no dates have been released yet. Congratulations to Threase and Matthew on the occasion of their wedding and wishing them a long life of wedded bliss!

Sympathy
The death occurred of Len Smith of 2 Cois Locha, Carrigallen, in Cavan General Hospital recently. Len was born and raised in Exeter, Devon, England. His love of the sea brought him to join the Merchant Navy at the age of sixteen. He travelled the world and spent the war at sea - twice being torpedoed. On one of these occasions, he spent the night in the sea, hearing his ship mates being taken by sharks (he always attributed his survival of that night to being covered in ships' oil).

After the Merchant Navy, he worked for Michelin Tyres in London, and then moved back to his beloved Devon to open his own tyre business. He was also lucky enough to be able to buy a yacht at this time. He spent many happy hours and days sailing Panacea around the coast of England and made over forty trips to France - happily bringing his quota of red wine back each time! He spent his retirement in the pretty village of Lympstone in Devon, until he and his wife Eleanor made the brave decision to move - at the age of 92- to Ireland- to Carrigallen, to be near their daughter & her family.

He spent only a short time here, fourteen months in total, but he was surrounded by his family, and received great care from the Home Help service and hospital staff. Len is sadly missed by all who knew him. Sympathy is expressed to his wife, Eleanor, daughter Julie and Seamus; grandchildren Jessica, Thiernan and Shalyn O'Rourke, relatives and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
