FR PATSY YOUNG
The late Fr Patrick (Patsy) Young was appointed curate of the parish of Carrigallen on 12 January 1963 and was here until l 2 August 1975 when he went onto Glenfarne as curate there. He resided in the Curate's house, Kivey. Apart from him performing his priestly duties efficiently he was instrumental in the betterment of the parish, and along with the then parish priest Canon Pat McNiffe in securing the building of Mart in Carrigallen. It was officially opened and blessed on 1 April 1970 and Fr Patsy did the blessing and the first sale took place on 18 March 1970.  Turnover in the first year was £1.34 million with sales of 17,067 cattle and 41,339 pigs.

Carrigallen had become a very popular venue for dances from the late fifties onwards and Fr Patsy saw an opportunity after the opening of the Clubrooms to attract larger crowds by hiring the top show bands of the time. He had a gala opening on 29 March 1967 with a double bill, the Hi-Lows Show band and Maurice Mulcahy's orchestra. Wednesday night dancing in Carrigallen became well established and all the top show bands played there. A new game called bingo was being played all over the country and the larger halls were a suitable venue and Fr Patsy convinced the parishioners to start a Sunday night bingo and it is still flourishing to this day.

Carrigallen claims a history of amateur theatre back to the last century and Fr Patsy got involved with them. It was at that time that the Carrigallen Players adopted the name the Community Players. In 1972 Fr Patsy took over the role of director and his first play was Bugle in the Blood and he was also lighting manager. The group reached the All-Ireland confined finals in Loughrea on their first attempt. The following year Gus Ward was asked to direct Sharon's Grave and Fr Patsy was again in charge of the lighting. In course of the year Gus became ill and the lot of director fell back to Fr Patsy. He proceeded with his cast and crew to win the All-Ireland award in Loughrea and again in 1975 with an outstanding production of The Honeyspike, along with winning the confined, came third in the open section in Athlone.

Fr Patsy lived a life dedicated to enriching his communities and its people, and a life spreading the joy of amateur dramatics to every parish he visited from Carrigallen to Shercock, Ballyconnell to Cavan. He was first and foremost a gentleman; the legacy of his skill in the amateur world still lives in our communities. He loved smoking his pipe and was a wonderful priest, sincere and kind-hearted.

Sympathy is extended to his brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, Bishop Leo O'Reilly, Priests of the Kilmore Diocese, relatives and friends. Requiem Mass was con-celebrated in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Ballyconnell, on Sunday last 9 February 2014 at 2:00pm with burial afterwards in Cullies Cemetery, Cavan.

DEATH OF RENOWNED CATTLE BREEDED
There was widespread regret at the death of Patrick ‘Sonny’ Kiernan, Augharan, Aughavas which occurred recently. Despite his advanced years Sonny enjoyed a very active life up to a short time prior to his death which saw him visit Carrigallen frequently where he would enjoy a drink and a chat about whatever was topical at the time. A keen sports man in earlier life Sonny was an excellent shot and hunted all across the country. But it was in the breeding and rearing of pedigree cattle Sonny stood out taking him all across the country initially with Hereford cattle and more recently Charolais. One of Sonny’s last such outings was to Carrick-on-Shannon a few weeks before his death to see his son Michael and family sweep the boards with record prices for their award winning cattle, which no doubt was a great source of pride to him.

Sonny’s removal and funeral saw a huge attendance with people from all over the country travelling to pay their respects to a well known and liked character. Sympathy is extended to his son Michael daughters Mary Rose and Josephine and their families.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

Margaret Harte RIP
Recently, the sad death took place of Margaret Hart (nee O’Neill) Killahurk, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim, Carraig Álainn (Beautiful Rock) as she referred to it so fondly and so longingly in her last illness. Margaret was born 22 March 1916, the second of 7 children of James and Margaret O’Neill, Killahurk, Carrigallen. Margaret, gentle and unassuming in manner, was a proud Leitrim woman, rooted in its history and traditions. She attended Carrigallen NS, a pupil of Master Paddy and Ms. King – where she received such a rounded education. There she gained a love of and fluency in the Gaelic tongue, something she treasured all her life.

As a young woman she went ahead to hold positions in Northern Ireland and in the UK, and afterwards in the Department of Agriculture here at home. In 1948 she married Frank Harte, Birr, Co Offaly. Theirs was a love-story written in Heaven which spanned 55 years.  They had four children. Living firstly in Birr they settled in Sandymount¸ Dublin in the early 60’s. Margaret was the heart of her family. She was a keen gardener and needlewoman and a splendid cook, happiest when offering a meal, breads or cakes to all who come to her home – her Christmas pudding was legendary.

With the arrival of her grandchildren her world was complete. At her knee, as did her children, they learned to smile, read and to pray. With Frank, their most precious gift to their family, after that of themselves, was their treasured faith. Margaret was a true and gently lady - ní bheidh a leithead ann arís. Sympathy is extended to her daughters Maureen and Jacinta; son Francis; brother Jack (Carrigallen); sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass was held in St Brendan’s Church, Birr, Co Offaly with Burial to Clonoghill Cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age finished their series of activities for 2013 with their Annual Christmas Party, held at Kilbrackan Arms Hotel.  The evening was enjoyed by all those attending, with wonderful food and excellent company! The icing on the cake was the €200 raised on the evening from a raffle, proceeds going to the local branch of St Vincent de Paul. Our last day-trip for 2013 was to Galway for the Continental Christmas Market – but we enjoyed the shopping centres too! We still have some more sessions of Zumba Dancing/Yoga to come with Julie Smith, and will be organising dates very soon. Happy New Year to all our members and their families!
