Neil Kerrigan RIP
It was with great shock that the people of Carrigallen learned of the untimely death of Neil Kerrigan, Houston, Texas, USA. Neil passed away peacefully at his home on 11 October 2016. He was a joyous child, a loving son and brother, and a generous young man with a caring heart and gregarious nature. His plan was to study Theology. Neil loved worship and country music, cars, watching sports, spending time with family and friends, and lifting others in their time of need. He lit up the room with his engaging smile and animated conservation. He poured his heart into others and lived a life of service from a very young age. He particularly enjoyed volunteering at the Houston Zoo, his school, and his church. Neil battled brain cancer for the past three years with courage, grace, humour and unyielding faith. Neil was a regular visitor to Beaghmore and he enjoyed his time spent here. Sympathy is extended to his parents Manju Monga and Tony Kerrigan; brother Sean; sister Sonia; uncle Matt Kerrigan and family, Beaghmore, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim. Neil was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. On Saturday, 19 November 2016 a Mass of Christian Burial was con-celebrated by Fr Denis Murray PP, and Fr Martin Keohane, Bandon, Co Cork, in St Mary's Church Carrigallen followed by the interment of ashes in the local cemetery. Exhibit extended due to popular demand!
Due to popular demand this exhibit has been extended until Saturday, 12 November 2016. It is a mural which consists of a map of Ireland dotted with four hundred and eighty five coins, to commemorate the four hundred and eighty five people who died during the 1916 Rising, made by 6th class pupils of St. Aidan's N.S., Bawnboy, Co. Cavan. Accompanying it is a scrapbook which fully explains the entire project from start to finish. The idea behind the mural was for the school to remember the 1916 centenary. It was decided to set up two collection points in the community to gather coins and each pupil in the school also participated by bringing a coin for the mural. To remember the Irish Diaspora and to recognise the 1916 rebellion on global stage, embassies with an Irish Ambassador were contacted to invite them to participate in the project and coins from twenty-four counties were received.

Under the guidance of local artist, Seánie Cassidy, counting, sorting and selecting of the coins then took place and finally they were placed on a map of Ireland. This wonderful piece of art will remain on display in Carrigallen Library until Saturday, 12 November. Opening hours are Monday, 1.30pm to 3.30pm & 4.00pm to 8.00pm; Wednesday 10.45am to 2.45pm & 3.00pm to 5.00pm and Saturday 10.00am to 1.00pm. Phone no 04943 39188. Bobby Mitchell RIP
The area was saddened at the recent passing of Bobby Mitchell from Drumgunny, Aughavas. Bobby was a much respected and well liked character with Carrigallen being his town where he did all of his business for most of his eighty-seven years. Exhibit in Carrigallen Library to Commemorate 1916 Rising
There is a fabulous display in Carrigallen Library of a project by 6th class pupils of St. Aidan's N.S., Bawnboy, Co. Cavan. It is a mural which consists of a map of Ireland dotted with 485 coins, to commemorate the 485 people who died during the 1916 Rising.

This wonderful piece of art will remain on display in Carrigallen Library until Wednesday, 9 November. Opening hours are Monday, 1.30pm to 3.30pm & 4.00pm to 8.00pm; Wednesday 10.45am to 2.45pm & 3.00pm to 5.00pm and Saturday 10.00am to 1.00pm. Phone no 04943 39188. Rose McHugh RIP
It was with a sense of great shock and disbelief that the people of Carrigallen and Scramogue, Co Roscommon, learned of the untimely death of Rose McHugh (nee McManus) at Sligo University Hospital, on Wednesday, 21 September 2016, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Rosie, as she was fondly known as, was the youngest of four children born to the late Jack and Rose McManus, Bredagh, Carrigallen. This respected family all had a great love of football and Rosie was to pass this onto her two sons Daniel and Joseph McGillycuddy, where both of them played for their club Glencar/Glenbeigh, Co Kerry. Some very proud moments for Rosie was seeing her son Joseph win a senior championship medal with Mid-Kerry and representing Kerry at minor - playing in Croke Park - and U-21 level. Having moved to Roscommon she loved attending matches when Carrigallen was playing, cheering on her two nephews, and continued to be a loyal Leitrim supporter.

Rosie and her devoted husband, Jimmy made their home in Scramogue, where she and Jimmy spent many happy years despite her illness, in the later years of their lives together. She was blessed with a very artistic talent and this was very evident in her home and her garden, working alongside Jimmy tirelessly, her unwavering desire always to see everything at its best.

She had many interests in life, travelling being one. On many occasions she travelled along with Jimmy, to visit her son Daniel and grandson Jason, in Boston, USA and Joseph and Catriona in England, last such trip being only weeks before she died, always bringing home something new for their home. Music and dancing was very important to her and going to music concerts gave them great joy. She had a great love of dogs and this was very evident in her care of their two dogs Blossom and Holly.

Rosie made friends wherever she went, was reliable and hard working. In her own quiet and unique way she helped out those in need compassionately and she was a great neighbour with no request ever being denied. She radiated positively gratitude and love right to the final moments and left a profound mark on everyone she met and knew. A very sad passage in Rosie's life was losing her beautiful daughter Rosemary, in an accident, while living in Boston, USA, a cross Rosie carried to her grave.

Sympathy is extended to her husband, Jimmy; her sons Daniel and Joseph; daughter-in-law Catriona; grandson Jason; sister Maureen Gormley, Kilbracken; brothers Jackie and Seamus, Bredagh, Carrigallen; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews; relatives and friends.

Following her passing, Rose's waking saw extremely large numbers of people attend to pay their respects before her remains were removed to St. Anne's Church on Saturday morning for funeral Mass. Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr John Sexton, and con-celebrated by Fr Jaroslaw Maszkiewicz PP Whitehall Scramogue, Fr Denis Murray PP Carrigallen and Fr Ultan McGoohan CC Teemore, with burial to the adjoining cemetery. Months Mind Mass will be on Wednesday, 2 November at 7.30pm in St Anne's Church, Scramogue. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam uasal.

Tidy Towns Results
This week it is the adjudicator's notes on the Built Environment and Streetscape. The public and commercial premises of the town generally looked well cared for on the day. The fine Church of Ireland looked most attractive and peaceful, with attractive maturing trees to its boundary on a well cut grass bank. The prominent Catholic Church was extremely fresh and its car parking area opposite was admired for its mature trees planting which break up the potential harshness of the car parking surface. The Vocational School also looked extremely fresh, as did the National School on the other side of town. The Corn Mill Theatre looked extremely well and fresh and its associated mill wheel made for a very interesting landscape feature. The Primary Care Centre was admired.

The Garda Station was well presented on its grassy bank and looked very fresh. The buildings on Main Street were generally cared for. Do ensure that any remaining plastic signage is removed and replaced with ones of the more traditional timber variety. There is a large industrial building to the Mohill side of the town which would benefit from a revamp - it is most unusual and attractive but is unfortunately neglected at the moment. In terms of commercial premises, Sharon's Beauty Box was very fresh, as was Just Jules, the Corner Bar, Masterson's and Mitchell's Bar. Centra, the Post Office and the Kilbrackan Arms were also admired. Charlie Farrelly's also looked well. A charming stepped gabled garage was admired on the Killeshandra Road, its roof would benefit from a repaint before next year's competition. Don't forget gable walls when considering presentation as they can be quite prominent and visible.

This event is followed by a production of 'Tom Clarke's One True Love', the play recently written by Killian McGuinness and directed by Gus Hanley. It dramatizes the life of Tom Clarke, the public and private man, and covers the time span from 1830 when his father James was born in Errew to Clarke's execution in 1916. During the course of the performance we meet Clarke, his wife Kathleen, Winifred Carney, James Connolly's secretary, McKenzie-Booth, a British Medical Officer, Patrick Pearse, a British recruit, Thomas Jnr., and a member of Cumman na mBan. It is betimes heartbreakingly sad but peppered with comedy. This final performance in the Corn Mill Theatre is on Friday, 7 October 2016. Please note earlier starting time of 8.00pm. Booking on 04943 39612, 086 8765377 or bookings@cornmilltheatre.com

Thank You!

Twenty friends and family took part on behalf of Heart Children Ireland, as part of Team Danny, raising €2,685. This will help HCI to continue to support the Children's heart Centre in Our Lady's Hospital Crumlin for which they are extremely grateful for.

Mick McNaboe RIP
The Carrigallen area was very saddened when the word of the passing of Mick McNaboe filtered out which occurred at the North West Hospice Sligo following an illness which only beset him in spring of this year. Mick as he was known was born in Beaghbeg, Carrigallen and as a young boy moved with his parents and siblings to London. His father was Jimmy and was a member of a well respected family. Having moved here some years ago with partner Denise, Mick was an integral part of the Resident's Association of the Barleyfield where he initially brought his organisational skills to benefit the residents and more recently as an employee of the Estate's Management Programme. He maintained the gardens and flower beds and was largely responsible for the establishment of the allotments, the first in the County at any local authority estate, as well as the recycling and composting initiative along with the play ground. He was a fanatical supporter of his old London Club, Mill Wall and he stayed loyal to them through all their highs and lows. A good conservationists Mick made for excellent company and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Sympathy is extended to his partner Denise; his two daughters, Tracy and Laura England; Uncle Tommy, Clooncorrick Carrigallen; brothers Chris, Danny, Peter, Jimmy & Kevin, sister Teresa, Denise's sons, relatives and friends. Mick's funeral saw a large attendance in St Mary's Church where Fr Dinny Murray  and Rev Patrick Bamber, Chaplain to North West Hospice, concelebrated the Mass. May he Rest in Peace.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age have just returned from a 3-day break in beautiful Roscrea, Tipperary. Based at the Racket Hall Hotel, members and friends enjoyed themselves at the Hotel where evening entertainment in the form of dancing, singing, bingo and a film were provided. And of course they all had a great time when they were out and about visiting places of interest which included: Clonmacnoise, remains of an ancient ecclesiastical site with crosses, temples and graves, founded by St. Ciaran; Birr Castle and gardens, home of the 7th Earl of Rosse, where the Great Telescope is arguably the largest historic scientific instrument still working today; the Rock of Cashel, set against a silhouette of medieval buildings in the Heart of Munster; Swiss Cottage, an ornamental cottage with famous wallpaper from the Dufour factory in Paris; Holycross Abbey, home of the Cistercian monks who lived a simple life and worked the land; Corlea Trackway, Kenagh, an Iron Age bog  road discovered in 148 BC, preserved and on display; Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, great views from the top and plenty to do in the Park.

Our driver was full of information and en-route pointed out the Garda Training College; Thomond Park, home of Munster Rugby, Simple Stadium as well as the Coolmore Stud, and lots more! Members even had time to squeeze some shopping in (of course!) at Roscrea and Limerick. Back down to earth on the way home with a stop for some lunch in McDonalds, and thoughts of some 'time out' to recover from this action-packed 3-day break in Tipperary!

Corn Mill Theatre Group 1916 Production

The premier of Tom Clarke's One True Love in the Corn Mill Theatre, by local playwright Killian McGuinness, on Friday 23 July 2016, saw a packed house, including the Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council Cllr. Mary Bohan, along with many of the elected members, including members of the County Centenary Committee who supported the production.

Local Cllr. Paddy O'Rourke who chairs the County Centenary Committee introducing the play said how confident he and the committee members were in supporting the project knowing that Killian and the Corn Mill Theatre Group would produce a work fitting and suitable to commemorate one of Ireland's greatest heroes, who had such strong local connections, and given Clarke's connection with the drama society in Dungannon while growing up there, and Carrigallen's long history of drama productions it was only natural part of our commemorations would involve the stage.

Cllr. O'Rourke said initially the committees work seemed difficult given the intense competition there was for financial support from so many groups up and down the county, but he was happy to say that all events and projects which were supported had surpassed all expectations compensating for small budgets with their enthusiasm and commitment. He commended them all. O'Rourke added he was pleased to say work has commenced on the Tom Clarke Memorial adjacent to the Tom Clarke rooms in the Community Hall, which should be completed in early Autumn.

Firstly, Members and friends went to an Exhibition in Ballinamore Library about events during 1916, in particular a documentary film on the life of Sean Mac Diarmada. The Exhibition had many of his belongings for us to look at, as well as Role Books of local schools to look up our friends and families!

Sean Mac Diarmada (27 January 1883-12 May 1916), also known as Sean MacDermott, was an Irish political activist and revolutionary leader. He was one of the seven leaders of the Easter Rising of 1916, and a member of the Military Committee of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) and was a signatory of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. He was executed for his part in the Rising at the age of thirty-three.

Raised in rural County Leitrim, he was a member of many associations which promoted the cause of the Irish language, Gaelic revival and Irish nationalism in general, including the Gaelic League. Within the Irish Republican Brotherhood, he was a close colleague and friend of veteran republican Tom Clarke.

Later on in the month we visited Dublin, firstly to the Little Museum, based in Stephens Green, a town house with some of the rooms given over to exhibitions depicting various stages of life in Ireland, including history regarding the Rising. Many original items have been donated to the Museum over the years, giving an authenticity to the displays and information. That evening saw us in the John Field Room at the National Concert Hall for a performance by the Co Leitrim Percy French Society (based in Mohill). The auditorium was packed for this stage interpretation, which will also be part of the Mardi Grá celebrations in Carrigallen.

Planning is taking place for our short break later on in the summer – and we are looking forward to our first session of our Healthy Body, Healthy Mind project with Veronica Conaty. Like to join us? Then please contact our Secretary on 0494339946.

Thank You!
Kevin and Noreen McManus would like to thank all of their relations, their neighbours on Church Street and all of the people from Carrigallen and the surrounding area that were such a great help to them after the recent fire at their home. Noreen and Kevin are so grateful for all the assistance and support they received over the last fortnight and it demonstrates what a strong community spirit exists in Carrigallen during times of need.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age need to give themselves a huge pat on the back! They have been doing some serious fund-raising recently, but not for themselves. Earlier this month Alfie and Ann Harte hosted an Alzheimer's Tea Day, on behalf of Active Age, in their home at Cois Locha, raising an amazing €870! We are assured that all money raised locally will be used locally to help people living with Alzheimer's, their families and carers. Also in May, €60 was raised for Arthritis Ireland to go towards the development of the first dedicated Unit, in Ireland, for Children with Arthritis. Sadly, some children are waiting over two years for a diagnosis to enable them to start the vital treatment they need. We would like to thank everyone who supported us so generously in raising this phenomenal amount of money for two such very worthy causes.

Margaret of New Orleans Mardi Grá Festival
Final plans are all coming together for our exciting festival which will be held from Friday, 1 July to Monday, 4 July 2016. Rachel Allen, Des Hopkins former member of the Dublin Jazz Band and friends, Cavan Big Band, Heritage Day at Margaret New Orleans cottage, many fringe events for children are some of the events which will be taking place. We would really appreciate it if people would dress in fancy dress/costume/carnival/mardi gra for our parade on Friday evening at 7.00pm approximately. If any organisation out there has a float not being used could you lend it to us, or come along with your floats, (please no tractors or big lorries).

Also did you know that the Margaret of New Orleans Mardi Grá festival has a Go Fund Me page? You can donate to our worthy cause and any moneys raised will go towards the running of the events during the festival itself and more importantly, allow us to bring some authentic food and musical talent directly from New Orleans!

All donations are appreciated and gratefully accepted. You can click on the link from our website: www.margaretymardigra.com or go directly to the GoFundMe page on: www.gofundme.com/76u8ypws

The Late James Eddie Kiernan RIP
While the term one of nature's gentlemen is often applied nowhere was it more appropriate than in describing the late James Eddie who passed away on Sunday, 8 May 2016 in Arus Carlon Nursing Home, Mohill, following a period of failing health. Eddie as he was known to many was very much part of Carrigallen having spent all of his eighty eight years in the community where he was known by everyone. While his principal employment was working the land for the Lockhart family and their predecessors the McGuinnesses, it was the wide range of obligingness that he carried out that endeared him to one and all.

Whenever a crises arose in and around Carrigallen, Eddie was the first to be sent for, whether it be to carry out emergency repairs to a roof top, put out a house fire, retrieve an off-roaded vehicle, round up a stray or aggressive animal, alleviate flooding at someone's house or yard, and in addition to all these tasks he would find time to learn someone to drive, run up on a roof top to adjust a TV aerial in order that some elderly person could enjoy their viewing to maximum advantage. Also bereaved families felt reassured when Eddie was at the digging of the graves for their loved ones as everything would be done right.

As a relief postman, Eddie was hugely popular with everybody as they looked forward to the daily brief but cheerful engagement with him as he made his way around the route often reminiscing how he had delivered telegrams to these same houses as a very young boy. Along with this busy life, Eddie found time to read extensively, often finishing a book of three hundred pages in a few nights. Blessed with a good memory until recent years, he could recount with great detail films he had seen as a young lad when he travelled to nearby towns to the cinema. Gardening and maintaining the hedge rows both at his own home and for friends and neighbours came natural to him, being regarded one of the best to take a tool of any kind in his hand.

The large attendance at Eddie's funeral in St Mary's Church, heard Fr Murray, who was joined by Fr Sean McDermott, in celebrating the Mass, regret the passing of one of our community's stalwarts who had been highly respected in the area. Sympathy is extended by his nephew Christy who along with his wife Hester cared for Eddie at their home in Druminchin for some time and to the extended family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam usual.

Kevin McCaffrey RIP
The area was saddened to learn of the death of Kevin McCaffrey of Bawnboy, Co Cavan, which occurred recently following a long illness. Kevin was very well known in the area having worked in the mart in its early years and also as an AI Officer when the service was delivered from Killeshandra. He also served in the Irish Army with many from the area while attached to Connolly Barracks in Longford. Establishing a very successful auctioneering business brought him in touch with many people and when in the late 1990's he bought a bar on Main Street, Carrigallen. Kevin and his family became very much part of the community supporting events and attending everything that was going on. He was a leading member of the Ploughing Match Committee and remained an enthusiast even after having sold on the bar to concentrate on farming and auctioneering. Kevin was a man of quick wit and good turn of phrase, his personality lent itself well to conducting public auctions where he would cajole reluctant bidders by suggesting they really needed what even it was he was selling. Sympathy is extended to his wife Sheila; sons Sean, Kevin, Niall and Padraig; daughter Catriona who is married to Andrew McIntyre of Clooncorrick, Carrigallen. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam usual.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Fit Kicks players, Jessie McManus, Kate Gormley, Aoibhinn Sheridan, Poppy Greenshields and the rest of Carrigallen NS Girls A Team who played sensational football and won The Leitrim FAI Schools 5-A-Side competition in convincing style last week in Manorhamilton. Having been undefeated and conceding just one goal on route, they continued to the final. In the group stages they won all their matches except for a thrilling 1-1 draw with last year's finalists Aughavas NS in which the girls led 1-0 till a late equalizer from Aughavas. Multiple goals were scored by all the girls in the group stage matches with some performances, goals and players being spoken about around the venue.

The final produced a local derby with the girls facing an Aughavas B team. A large crowd gathered to watch the final. Carrigallen started strong and never took the foot off the pace and came out of the match victorious with some fantastic individual and team goals scored by Jessie, Kate, Poppy and Aoibhinn with their best performance wrapping up the tournament in style with the title coming back to Carrigallen. They now travel to Castlebar next week to represent Leitrim in the Connaught Finals. Best of luck in the finals.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age

During the year members had visits from a number of speakers and events centered on awareness raising issues, especially for health, security and entitlements. We were represented at a variety of Forums and Meetings and took part in activities including yoga classes and 10-pin bowling. We also supported three national charities raising over €1,000 which will be used to help local people and their carers.

Officers elected for 2016: Chairperson - Lottie McGerty; Treasurer - Ann Harte; Social Secretaries - Ann Harte and Christy Kiernan and Secretary/PRO - Valerie Elsegood. Thanks were expressed to the outgoing Social Secretary, Maura O'Rourke, the first member to hold this position. Several new members were welcomed during the year – please contact any of our members or officers if you are interested in joining us, you will be very welcome.

Would you like to take part in an eight week jogging program aimed at getting complete beginners to comfortably be able to jog a full 5km at the end of eight weeks? No experience needed and all for ages* (11+) and all abilities catered for. The Couch to 5km program has been very successful nationwide at getting people up and active. Each week the group will meet and follow the plan, as each week passes we gradually increase the distance/time spent jogging but be assured you can go at your own pace and rest when you want to.

The program is easy to follow and breaks down each part of the session into obtainable targets/goals. The cost of the eight week program will be €10. Min age 11/12 accompanied by adult. Please contact Paul on 0838029692 for more information or details.
