Death of Mary Durkin Née McGoohan
There was widespread regret in her native Carrigallen following the death of Mrs Mary Durkin, Granard, at Mullingar Hospital following a long illness. Mary was the daughter of the late James and Kathleen McGoohan, Kilbracken Post Office. Mary was educated at Portlongfield N.S. and the Vocational School Carrigallen. She studied nursing in England and worked in hospitals there and in Dublin, Cavan and Westmeath. She married Patrick Durkin, Granard, and took responsibility for managing Durkin's Drapery business, serving a large customer base in the north Longford area.

Mary was hugely involved in many aspects of community life in Granard. She was a founder member of the Credit Union, an active member of the St Joseph's Young Priests Society among other organisations. Mary was noted for her goodness and kindness to people, especially those in need. She was a faithful stand-by, a wise counsellor and a generous neighbour. Her deep Catholic faith found its fullest expression in the way Mary lived her life generously serving others. She was devoted to her children and proud of their achievements; and the arrival of the grandchildren brought a new dimension to her life. Mary rejoiced in nature and the simple things of life.

The large attendance at her funeral on Friday 19 May was testament to the esteem in which she was held. The Mass was celebrated by her nephew Rev. Ultan McGoohan, assisted by Very Rev. Simon Cadam, P.P. and Rev Seamus Fullerton. Mary was laid to rest in the Durkin family plot alongside her late son Hugh in Granardkille Old Cemetery. We express our sympathies to her husband Paddy, her children Oliver, Sabina, Patrick and Claire, her grandchildren, her brothers Sean (Kilbracken) and Frank (Athy) and all of the extended family.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active age have had a busy time during the last few weeks. On Monday, 8 May an Alzheimer's Tea Day was held at the home of Alfie and Ann Harte, Cois Locha, Carrigallen.  An amazing €700 was raised, which will be used locally to help support people affected by this disease, and to support their families and carers. A big thank you goes to everyone who came along on the day, and for all those generous donations. A big thank you too to Alfie and Ann!

More recently members and friends had one of their Nice Days Out, visiting Sligo Folk Park in the morning (tea and scones on the way!) and Eagles Flying in Ballymote during a rather wet afternoon. A stop-off on the way home at Ardcarne Garden Centre for a browse round the Garden Centre – and yet more tea and scones! The day ended with an excellent meal at Cryans Hotel in Carrick on Shannon. We're looking for ideas to our next Nice Day Out - so please come and join us!

Second All-Ireland Title
Congratulations go to Clare and John Finnegan, daughter and son of Martina and Michael Finnegan, Drummerkane, Carrigallen, who won a second All Ireland Badminton title at the All-Ireland Grade B in Lisburn recently. In the final they lost the first set 13-21, fighting back to take the second set 21-18. The final set was the closest of all with both pairs having opportunities to serve for the title after they tied at 20-20, however, Clare and John managed to make their own little bit of history by winning the tie break 24-22. After their win in Lisburn, Clare and John now hold both the Grade C and Grade B All-Ireland mixed titles in the same season. Well done!

Carrigallen Macra
Titles Night - Macra members from across the county flocked to the Bush Hotel on Saturday night last to battle it out to represent the county in the various Macra competitions over the coming year. Each contestant had to stand up in front of the crowd and undergo an interview giving details about their background and why they felt they would represent the county well on the national stage. Ray Gilmartin was MC on the night with Diarmuid Murray (Roscommon) and Sarah Walsh (Sligo) judging the talent on display. Well done to Brendan Curran, Ann Marie McCaffrey and Brigid Stenson on organising the night. It was a successful night for our club with two members chosen to represent the county. The following people were selected, Emma Coyle (North Leitrim) - Queen of the Land, Paula Kiernan (Carrigallen) – North West Queen, Helen Gannon (South Leitrim)- Ms Macra, Becky McDermott (South Leitrim) - Ms Blue Jeans, Conor Banks (North Leitrim) – North West King and Fergus O'Rourke (Carrigallen) - Mr Personality. Best wishes to all representing our county over the coming year. Leitrim Macra ABU!

Pool Competition
The club recently held a pool competition in MJ's bar to raise funds for the running of the club over the coming year. In a keenly fought competition thirty two players battled it out with Matis Polis and Jack Bell reaching the final. In the end Matis Polis was the winner in a final which went right down to the wire! Both finalists received prize money for their exploits. We were also delighted to have our former Training and Development Officer, Hazel Wilkinson, taking part in the competition. A raffle also took place on the night and the club wishes to thank all who donated spot prizes and bought tickets. We would like to thank MJ's bar for the use of their facilities also. A big well done goes to club treasurer, Brian Kiernan, who came up with the idea, and ran the competition so well.

'Having our Say'
Members from the club attended a #CAP2020 consultation meeting in Sligo recently. This is an initiative run by Macra where meetings were held across the country getting the views of young farmers on what they would like to see discussed and included in the upcoming negotiations on the next round of the Common Agricultural Policy. Members also attended a Macra Strategic Planning meeting in Roscommon where members from the northwest were invited to have their say on what they would like to see changed and improved in Macra and what they see as areas of priority for the organisation in the coming years.

North Leitrim Lipsync
Members from the club went along to a fantastic nights entertainment which our neighbours in North Leitrim Macra held in the Blue Devon Dromahair recently. Contestants were up on stage miming to their song of choice with some very peculiar acts indeed!! Well done to all involved.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age have been busy over the last month or two. At the end of November several Members and friends went on a Christmas Shopping Trip to Blanchardstown – where some of the Group went to the Cinema within the Complex to rest their weary feet and watch the latest Bridget Jones film! Stopping in Virginia on the way home for dinner was the perfect end to a really enjoyable day. A month on, in December, and Members and friends celebrated the festive season with their Annual Christmas Party, held this year in Mitchells.

A raffle in aid of our local Multiple Sclerosis Society was held, and raised €160 – a big thank you to all who donated prizes, and those buying the tickets, of course. Thank you too to the staff at Mitchells who made the evening run so smoothly for us, and for providing a lovely meal. Our AGM will be held in February, and we look forward to setting our programme for the coming year. Funding has already been confirmed for some physical activities! Interested in joining us? Then please contact any of our current Members for more information, or alternatively, Lottie (Chairperson); Ann (Treasurer): or Valerie (Secretary 049 4339946).
