Carrigallen Community News

16 March 2015

Carrigallen Concerned Citizens Group
Following two very productive meetings recently, Sergeant Michael Collins met with Chairperson Frankie Greene answering questions and concerns raised in a letter presented to the Superintendent by the Committee concerned anti -social behaviour in our community in recent months. The Committee encourage people who have any concerns or been a victim of such activities to contact our Chairperson, or local Garda Hugh Brady. Only officially documented incidents can be followed up by the Gardaí.

The Committee would like to compliment Garda Hugh Brady for his good work, and very informative talks he gave to students in St. Mary's N.S. and Vocational School Carrigallen recently on the consequences of juveniles getting into anti-social behaviour, and vandalism. Also thanks to Sergeant Michael Collins for his support, co-operation, and openness to work with the committee into the future. The Committee will continue to work together and look at different options, or ways of meeting the needs of our youth. How they can play an active part in making Carrigallen a safe and lovely place to live and visit.

Posters are currently been designed by Tony Fahy, to display locally making people aware of a community working together, and having zero tolerance of any anti-social behaviour. The next meeting of the Committee will take place in Carrigallen Community Hall on Monday, 23 March at 9:10pm.

Concerned Citizens of Carrigallen
Due to an increase in anti- social behaviour, intimidation, and vandalism of property in our town, people are asked to be vigilant and report any incident to the local Garda. This quiet community will not tolerate such behaviour, mainly carried out by juveniles, and are currently in the process of setting up an active group based on very successful community templates, to at least leave the senior members of our community feel safe at night in their homes. This group will work closely with the very successful Text Alert scheme at present in operation and the Garda Síochána.

The Dead School
The 2014 RTE All-Ireland Drama Winners return with Pat McCabe's The Dead School, directed by Ronan Ward. With a cast of twenty-six actors, and a play from one of Ireland's internationally renowned writers; Pat McCabe (The Butcher Boy, Breakfast on Pluto), this black comedy will keep audiences enthralled from beginning to end - a rollercoaster from the word go.

Raphael Bell, the old-style national school teacher whose life is haunted by images and memories from his past, has devoted his life to upholding his school's rigorous core curriculum. By the late 1960s, however, parents and students have begun to question Bell's inflexibility on such issues as corporal punishment and mandatory school prayer. Bell attributes all such criticism to the baleful influence of television, rock music, and American movies. His rage finally finds a focus in Malachy Dudgeon, a first-year teacher who seems to embody all the worst features of the counterculture. The two are soon locked in a power struggle that can only end in disaster.

The Corn Mill Theatre Group presents The Dead School by Pat McCabe and directed by Ronan Ward on Thursday 26, Friday 27 February, Sunday 1 March, Wednesday 4 March and Thursday 5 March 2015. Pancake Tuesday
The Pancake Day fundraiser held in the Carrigallen Vocational School on Tuesday last was an outstanding success with over €1,000 raised for the Oncology Unit at Cavan General Hospital. It was held in the recently extended refurbished Home Economics room which was made available by kind permission of the Board of Management and school Principal Mr Declan Conboy.

The flipping of pancakes saw mixed results with some casualties been recorded by the youngsters, while the steady hand of the Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council Paddy O'Rourke saw him flip the cake without a single drop. The committee would like to thank all those who helped publicise the event, particularly Clodagh Murray, Gorthhoose, a student at Vocational School who designed an excellent poster for the event.

Tom Mollahan RIP
The area was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Tom Mollahan of Tully which occurred at Cavan General Hospital following a very short illness. Born 59 years ago, an only child to John and Ann (formerly Corrigan), Tom was a quiet man who was liked by all who came in contact with him. Having attended Gotermone National School he went on to the Vocational School where his teachers and fellow students agreed he excelled in many subjects and showed promise of great academic achievement were it not for the fact he quit school early following the untimely and sudden death of his father.

In his early years, Tom played football (which was no surprise given his uncle Pee had founded the famous Tully team along with mentoring and training many other teams) and returned to the field in the late seventies following an absence of a few years and retained a great interest in Gaelic games, following all the action through reports in local papers and radio. Being a keen reader Tom read all the local weekly papers along with argi related magazines and some carefully selected books and perhaps a legacy from early school days was his remarkable style of writing which was often commented on by anyone who had occasion to receive correspondence from him.

Tom's removal to St Mary's church saw a large crowd in attendance despite the inclement weather conditions, while the funeral saw equally large numbers attend where they heard his cousin Shaun Corrigan deliver a very fitting eulogy in which he paid tribute to Tom's neighbours who had helped him especially since the onset of his illness and declaring ''it is not important how many Facebook friends you have but rather how many actually turn up when you need them'' and in this regard Tom was blessed in that he lived in a neighbourhood who cared for him. Fr Murray spoke of Tom's regular attendance at all religious ceremonies, his sincerity and genuine decency and how he accepted his illness despite the apparent cruelty of it. Sympathy is extended to his uncle Pat Corrigan, Drumderglin, Carrigallen, his cousins, relatives and many friends. May he rest in peace.

However, a special sitting of Mohill District Court will be held on 2 May 2015 in the Hunt Hall, Castle Street, Mohill at 9:00pm sharp! The last special sitting of Mohill District Court took place last May 2014 when Judge John James Sharkey presided over Percy French v The West Clare Railway Company. Percy French won his case and was awarded £10 plus expenses. Now the West Clare Railway is counter suing Percy French. Judge John James Sharkey will preside over the case.  It all relates to the song 'Are Ya right there Michael are ya right' which Percy composed after he won his case last May.  The West Clare Railway is suing Percy for Libel and Slander. In the meantime, statements are being taken from various witnesses and they will be examined and cross examined on the day by two very eminent counsels, Mr Bailey and Mr Considine. The Co. Leitrim Percy French Society is summoning everyone to come out and support Percy against the might of the West Clare Railway so that Percy can enjoy his party the following night Sunday 3 May 2015! Don't Tell the Bride visits Carrigallen
On Wednesday, 10 December 2014, Threase Finnegan, daughter of Martina and Michael Finnegan, Drummerkane, Carrigallen got married in St Mary's Church, Carrigallen after only three weeks of her now husband Matthew's planning of their dream day. The adventure began in September when the young couple seen an advertisement that RTÉ were looking for couples to take part in the television show 'Don't Tell The Bride'. Threase and Matthew applied and after many interviews and meetings, finally found out in the last week of November that they had been accepted for the show. The show involved the couple being given €10,000 for their wedding on the conditions that the groom planned the whole day down to every last detail. Another condition of the show was that the couple had absolutely no contact for the three weeks before the wedding.

Threase and their guests did not find out the wedding date until four days prior to the wedding. The couple enjoyed a unique day with their family and friends and would like to thank them all for helping make their day special. They would like to thank them for their patience as filming inevitably delayed some parts of the day. They would also like to thank Fr D. Murray PP Carrigallen, for his beautiful ceremony and his ability to keep secrets from the Bride herself! The show will be aired at the end of February; however, no dates have been released yet. Congratulations to Threase and Matthew on the occasion of their wedding and wishing them a long life of wedded bliss!

Sympathy
The death occurred of Len Smith of 2 Cois Locha, Carrigallen, in Cavan General Hospital recently. Len was born and raised in Exeter, Devon, England. His love of the sea brought him to join the Merchant Navy at the age of sixteen. He travelled the world and spent the war at sea - twice being torpedoed. On one of these occasions, he spent the night in the sea, hearing his ship mates being taken by sharks (he always attributed his survival of that night to being covered in ships' oil).

After the Merchant Navy, he worked for Michelin Tyres in London, and then moved back to his beloved Devon to open his own tyre business. He was also lucky enough to be able to buy a yacht at this time. He spent many happy hours and days sailing Panacea around the coast of England and made over forty trips to France - happily bringing his quota of red wine back each time! He spent his retirement in the pretty village of Lympstone in Devon, until he and his wife Eleanor made the brave decision to move - at the age of 92- to Ireland- to Carrigallen, to be near their daughter & her family.

He spent only a short time here, fourteen months in total, but he was surrounded by his family, and received great care from the Home Help service and hospital staff. Len is sadly missed by all who knew him. Sympathy is expressed to his wife, Eleanor, daughter Julie and Seamus; grandchildren Jessica, Thiernan and Shalyn O'Rourke, relatives and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
