Carrigallen Christmas Lights

The Christmas lights are up in the town once again and are looking well and hopefully getting everyone into the Christmas spirit. Unfortunately over the past couple of years the cost of running the lights has more or less trebled as Electric Ireland have increased the standing charge on meters that are not in constant use from €164.00 to €368 per year including V.A.T. and there are three meters located about the town which adds up to €1104.00 before a single bulb is lighted.

Last year's costs: Electricity Bills including Standing charge €1618.78; New bulbs €150.00; Christmas Tree Stand €110.00; Christmas Tree Lights €350.00; Labour costs € 300.00 which is a Total of €2528.78 Funds Raised: Sponsorship from town Businesses €1300.00 and the Christmas Draw €600.00 which is a Total of €1900.00 leaving a deficit of €628.00.

After this year, if it is possible to raise enough funds to pay all Electric Ireland Bills up to date, we propose to have at least two of the meters disconnected to save on these outstanding costs. The Committee would like to thank most sincerely all our sponsors so far (we will have a full list next week) and to let you know that we are also running a draw for three fabulous prizes of €300.00 worth of Home Heating Oil, 3 Tonne Load of Sticks and €100.00. Tickets are on sale in Pat Masterson's, McCann's Centra and The Post Office, €2each or three for €5. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

“Though The Lens” A new play by Leitrim Youth Theatre Company Carrigallen
Leitrim Youth Theatre Co. Carrigallen formed over nine years ago under Arts Initiative within Arts Department Leitrim County Council goes from strength to strength,  also involving groups in Carrick on Shannon and Manorhamilton. This year’s production bring 25 young actors together in a new play “Through another Lens” written by youth member Ryan Finnegan, members of the group, Maura Williamson and Yvonne Heijeneman. It is directed by Maura Williamson, Yvonne Heijeneman, Ryan Finnegan, and collaborative devising from members of the group.

Described by Ryan as a modern play about how society cannot accept people who are different, “outcasts”.  A Young girl having been home schooled for ten years goes to secondary school for the first time, and is faced with many difficulties, personal and otherwise.  With the presence of bullies tormenting her, their inability to adjust and embrace her different, comments, tricks and words can have a devastating effect on a sensitive bright girl.  Could all of this become too much for her? Could she crack? A play with some strong language, strong messages, audiences are to be educated and entertained.

Leitrim Youth Theatre Co. Carrigallen performs at the Corn Mill Theatre on Friday and Saturday 29 and 30 November at 8:30pm and Sunday 1 December at 2:00pm. We encourage youth groups to come and support this talented creative group of youth theatre actors.  Over 12’s, admission €5 per student family rates apply. Booking at 0494339612. Percy French Night
The Percy French night at the School House on Friday night last saw a full house at Bredagh Old School House. The audience enjoyed a wonderful musical treat provided by Tish Dunleavy and her group Leitrim Percy French Society. It was a first for Tish and friends to perform at the School House but it certainly wasn’t a first to have the music of Percy French heard there as Paddy O’Rourke referred to in his introduction of the group. He reminded the audience that French himself had chosen the venue to premier his famous ‘Phil the Fluter’s Ball’ in 1888 while attending a party there, having composed the song in response to a local topic of conversation he observed while being a guest at the home of Rev Godley in Druminchin. Tish was ably supported by Frank Caddan who looked and played the part of French so well. She led the Group through all the favourite songs with the eager audience joining in at every opportunity. A number of the Group sang solo their own favourites to great applause with the only regret being when it ended. Afterwards, the audience having being fortified with a generous array of refreshments made their way out into a beautiful crisp November night.

Faces from Our Archive Exhibition
Faces from Our Archive is an exhibition of people’s faces from Leitrim County Library’s photographic archive.  It comprises forty six photographs, mostly black and white and some colour photographs. The purpose of the exhibition is to highlight the photographic archive and to let people know it is being digitised and now available on line at the library’ website www.leitrimlibrary.ie.

The photographs are being digitised under a TUS scheme run by the Leitrim Genealogy Centre. One of the first employee’s on the TUS scheme was Derval Symes an artist, who saw a potential in making an exhibition from some of the photographs. She put aside a number of photographs which make up the exhibition today. Derval did not know any of the people in the photographs and as she said herself “I did not know any of the subjects but somehow, I connected with them”. This is a very strong exhibition. Faces looking out at you from an archive.

Digitisation of the Archive at Ballinamore library continues under the TUS scheme run by the Genealogy Centre. Karen O Reilly and Michael McLoughlin are both working at digitising and indexing the collection at the County Library Headquarters. If you would like to add to the collection you can bring your photographs to Ballinamore library and have them digitised on the spot and returned to you immediately. The exhibition is presently on display at  Ballinamore Library and it will be touring the county.

Local Elections
Preparations for the 2014 local elections are getting under way with some party selection conventions completed. Local Cllr Paddy O’Rourke has received a Fianna Fáil nomination along with Cllrs C Ellis and F Gilmartin to contest in what is a greatly enlarged Ballinamore area stretching from Cornafest east of Carrigallen to Dowra taking in Drumshanbo, Ballinaglera and Keshkerrigan in addition to the existing area, where no fewer than eight sitting Cllrs and some new candidates will be chasing just six seats to form the newly slimmed down version of Leitrim County Council of just eighteen in total.

Sinn Féin has selected Cllr M Kenny accompanied by Maureen Martin and Brendan Barry as their standard bearers in the same area.  Fine Gael convention delegates are being canvassed vigorously in anticipation of their selection convention. Either way the 2014 elections makes for interesting times with reduced numbers on all Councils except those who have very large populations along the east coast which will mean areas of low population will have less influence at decision making.

Leitrim Development Company Funding for Margaret’s Cottage
The committee of Margaret of New Orleans Birthplace is delighted to announce the allocation of €20,654 funding for further works to complete Margaret’s cottage from Leitrim Development Company, Drumshanbo.

The money has been provided to bring the cottage up to a higher level of finish for visitors and craft courses to be held in the cottage as an on-going basis, providing an enhanced visitor attraction for the locality. The committee has made links with Bredagh Old National, which is near completion and Michael Masterson's Haggard in Ballyduffy, Moyne, Co. Longford.  We hope to have many links in the future to promote each other’s projects and for people to enjoy what the area has to offer.

The new work currently under way includes solar power for the cottage; composting toilet facility; provision of traditional furniture; building of fireplace and hearth; erection of memorial stone for official opening; laying of flagstone flooring; installation of authentic ceiling covering and loft space; further signposting to the cottage on all approaching roads and capping of existing walls with the installation of an information lectern at the entrance to the site.

The committee would like to acknowledge the help of Leitrim Development Company in these works and would like to thank all the local men who have given their time endlessly to the project and never look for any thanks.  Without their contributions the project would not exist and they are always on hand to knock things down and rebuild them again. The works will be completed by December 2013 and we will then look forward to welcoming further visitors to the area for the 2014 season and beyond.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Roisin Lyons daughter of Gerry who is a native of Killahurk, Carrigallen and Helena Lyons who is one of only two Irish born dancers in the new sensational show Heartbeat of Home.  Roisin started dancing at the age of three at the O’Shea School and later at Donoghue School of dancing in Dublin. She competed in over twenty major championships including World, European  and All Ireland Championships been placed in the top six every year. At the age of twenty she joined Lord of the Dance, performing alongside Michael Flatley in 2010 for his return tour. She has toured with Lord of the Dance for the last three years taking up the lead role of Morrighan in 2012. She has also danced with a number of others shows including To Dance on the Moon and Women of Ireland. Roisin is a regular visitor to her uncles Noel and Vinny and families in Killahurk.

Margaret of New Orleans and Leitrim Tourism
A meeting was held in The Kilbraken Arms Carrigallen on 18 September 2013 and was facilitated by Fiona Candon of First Western and organised by Leitrim Development Company, Drumshanbo. Fiona has many years of experience in tourism and has worked with a variety of groups in the North West to showcase their area and come up with engaging tourism bundles, working in co-operation within the local community to provide an enhanced visitor experience to Ireland’s shores.

No longer can we sit back and wait for people to come to Ireland and rely on the old links that have served Ireland well in the past.  With a global market of stellar visitor experiences across the globe, Ireland's task of enticing people here have to be heartfelt, imaginative, value for money and cater to a wide variety of visitors expectations. From the thrill seekers, hen parties and adventure sports people to the heritage, root searching, culture vulture visitors.

The adage of 'Come visit me' no longer holds an attraction for most visitors, but more 'Come experience my life' is more to the point. We have the sad reality of a diaspora that spreads to every corner of the world, but the advantage of having links to all the people who wish to find out what their ancestors lives were like and what the lives of their relatives consist of today is an invaluable resource.

The tourism providers in the locality all met to share ideas and link together to provide Tourism Bundles for Leitrim Tourism on Tourism Ireland's website.  The listings are free and Fiona is delighted to work with anyone in the area that can help promote Carrigallen and tap into the vast knowledge and experiences available in the area.  We have so much going for us from Mushroom Festivals, Fishing, Heritage, Hill walking, Theatre nights, quiet roads for cycling and an ancient history and heritage to beat the band.  With Ireland’s folklore and natural landscape still rich in wildlife and diversity, we have the peace and tranquillity that people crave in a temperate climate that does not hinder outdoor activities.

Margaret of New Orleans committee is involved with developing such packages for the area and will link in with sister projects in the area to create a good visitor experience for the future. Please visit www.margaretsbirthplace.com for updates and contact details to the group if you wish to submit ideas or enquire about up-coming events in the cottage.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age recently held their first meeting since the summer break – and discussed Christmas shopping! But that’s not all that was on the Agenda.  There was a lot to catch up on including feedback from our  three-day break to Connemara in September.  This was a great success, and included some of our members dressing up and re-enacting a scene from the film ‘The Quiet Man’.  A few of the photographs from that re-enactment (plus others of interest) are currently on display in Ballinamore Library (until 14 October) to mark Positive Ageing Week

The Christmas Shopping trip was a serious suggestion, and plans are in hand to make it happen during November.  We also discussed the possibility of a return outing to 10 Pin Bowling, and if funds permit more sessions of Armchair Yoga – and we mustn’t forget the Christmas Party!

Just a few of the activities to look forward to – and there will be more to come before the end of the year. During the Meeting we remembered one of our members sadly no longer with us – John Joe Rudden.  John Joe was not only a well respected, and well known, figure in Carrigallen, he was also one of our founder members and will be greatly missed.

Bredagh Old School Carrigallen Dedication and Re-Opening
Bredagh Old School Carrigallen was built in 1840 and was originally a Church of Ireland School.  After major renovation work in recent months it will be reopened on Saturday 12 October 2013.  As a result of rural Development Leader funding it was possible to undertake the major renovation work including fitting a new kitchen and toilets, dry lining, building a stone wall around the property, making car parking space, renovating floors, installing central heating, eletrical work and fitting a new set of stairs.

The Old School will be used as a Church and Community venue for such events as Sunday School, tea after special services and funerals, fundraising activities, social events, education classes, health events, agricultural meetings, craft days, minority faith activities, youth activities, and senior citizen activities.

Everyone is warmly invited to come along on Saturday 12 October 2013 at 3:00pm when Bishop Ferran Glenfield, Bishop of Kilmore, Elphin and Ardagh will deditacte Bredagh Old School and officially open it.  The Service of Deditaction will be held in the Church beside the School and afterwards refreshments will be served in the Old School. Then everyone will have the opportunity to view the renovation and look at photographs from school days.

Fundraising is presently ongoing for the renovation and a collection will be taken up at the Service to help met the costs of the major work.  If anyone would like to give a donation please contact Mervyn Richardson, Treasurer or any other member of Bredagh Old School Committee.  Further fundraising activities will take place over the coming months.

Gathering Stitches
Crafty Ladies Carrigallen had a wonderful 'Gathering Stitches' afternoon event on Tuesday last, 24 September 2013 at the Corn Mill Theatre Carrigallen.  What an array of diverse squares we received, not just locally but  from around the world. And what a glorious display of unique and beautiful patchwork designs, every colour of the rainbow, each with a different theme, murals, collages, screenprints, beads, flowers, shells, sequins, etc. The artistic interpretations were amazing as each contributor had very special stories to tell, some happy and some sad ones too.  Squares are still coming in from all over, so we have extended the deadline to receive them by post to the end of October.  No doubt we will have more than one quilt to sew together!  All the stories will be photographed and compiled into a unique keepsake book of memories in November (update later).

We would like to thank all the contributors who made squares, shared their stories with us and came along to our Gathering, it was a unique experience and was enjoyed by the fantastic crowd we had, both local and overseas visitors from England, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. We would like to thank the Corn Mill Theatre committee for the use of their lovely venue and Coffee Dock, also a big thank you to Kathy Lyons for the beautiful patchwork cake and to the Crafty Ladies members who baked all the goodies and helped to make it such a successful event. Thanks also to the hardworking committee who drove this project for more than a year, well done!

Leitrim Roots Festival
Tuesday 24 September 2013 saw the arrival of forty overseas visitors to Carrigallen as part of the Leitrim Tourism Roots Festival. They were guided by Loughlin McManus from Tully to Margaret of New Orleans Birthplace and regaled with stories of the locality and the journey of Margaret’s life from her humble beginnings in a small thatched cottage on the hillside of Tully South and her life’s achievements in the heart of America’s New Orleans.  As one of America and Irelands unsung heroines due to her many philanthropic ventures through hard work and hardship she always set about her work with a kind heart and dedication that was commemorated on her death by a State funeral and the first woman to have a statue erected in her honour.

All of the visitors had roots in Leitrim and were visiting long lost relatives or finding new connections that they never knew they had.  They were able to readily identify with Margaret’s plight as many of their relatives had similar stories from sheep rustlers deported to the penal colony of Australia to the hundreds of people forced into building a new life in America.  There were even visitors from the UK and Ireland who were tracing their roots or just enjoying the stories and the scenery.

Margaret’s committee and the Roots visitors were then treated to a delicious meal in The Kilbraken Arms Hotel all inclusive of their tour followed by an eclectic mix of musical history, storytelling and traditional music in The Corn Mill Theatre. The event coincided with the Crafty Ladies  Gathering event in the Corn Mill Theatre where they were able to see the 'Gathering Stiches' exhibition that was bringing peoples stories together from all parts of the globe to celebrate their Leitrim connections via the medium of quilting.

Our visitors enjoyed a hearty welcome from the community of Carrigallen and were treated to a real 'Céad Míle Fáilte' in the true sense of the word with everyone working together to make a memorable experience for the people whom made the effort to come home to the shores of Ireland after many generations of exile.  The Margaret of New Orleans committee would like to thank sincerely the efforts of all who made the visit so successful and of course Leitrim Tourism and our very own Sinéad McDermott in promoting the area and putting us on the map. We look forward to welcoming our next group of visitors from New Orleans who will be visiting with Hy-Braysil Tours in June 2014.

Tug-O-War Reunion
Carrigallen Tug-O-War Club started in the late summer of 1975 after having been successful in two tournaments.  The winnings gave the lads the confidence that they might have the potential to participate in and win further tournaments.  The Club was formed in February 1976 and the training schedule was put in place.

Their coach was John Burke who had pulled extensively as an anchorman in England and had won many trophies and cups.  In training John showed them the importance of pulling with their bodies rather than with their arms which the beginners instinctively did.

Taking advice the club affiliated with the All Ireland Tug of War Association giving them the opportunity to pull at all their fixtures.
The Club's first pull was on Easter Sunday 1976 in Kells, Co Meath as they had a section for novice teams.  They were jubilant on the day and the team were Sonny Kiernan, Kevin McManus, Tommy Grimes, James Grimes, Joe Grimes, Peter Duignan, Mickie Flynn and anchorman was Joe Reilly. For the next four years they won some, and lost some but were always gracious in their defeat, which they were known and respected for.

The Club's funds were none existent, except for the contributions from members and it was decided to fundraise, and a dance was arranged for St Stephen's Night 1976, which was arranged by Joe Reilly, Gerry Lyons and Loughlin McManus.  The Club then had the funds and their first purchase was a rope at a cost of £60 and a set of jerseys.  At this stage Gerry Lyons and Loughlin McManus had taken over as coaches and John Mulligan helped to train also.

The Club were Connacht champions at two weights 113stone and catch weight for three years in succession 1978, 1979 and 1980.  The team were Joe Reilly, Sonny Kiernan, Kevin McManus, James Grimes, Tommy Grimes, Joe Grimes, Peter Duignan, Seán Connolly, Mel Grimes and Liam Grimes. The Club brought All-Ireland status to Carrigallen by hosting the 106 stone novices All Ireland Championship in 1978 in which they were narrowly defeated in the final pull by the Mayo team.

Other members of the panel who pulled on numerous occasions were Seán MuIntyre, Tommy Sheridan, Francis Corcoran, Michael Kenny, Seamus McCarte, Johnny Reilly, Michael ‘Sambo’ Reilly, Sean Reilly and Jim Kiernan. The Carrigallen Tug-O-War Club won sixty major titles and they even beat the Yanks when they participated in the World Championships which was held in Dundalk, Co. Louth.

The Club disbanded in 1982.  For a small community with no tradition of tug of war much was achieved. Come along to the big reunion on Saturday 14 September 2013 in the Kilbrackan Arms Hotel at 9:00pm. Members from both the female and male teams will be in attendance.  Food will be served and entertainment will be provided. Everybody welcome!

John Joe Rudden RIP
There was widespread sadness throughout the community of Carrigallen and neighbouring areas when the news spread of the death of John Joe Rudden, one of Carrigallen's best known and respected citizens, which occurred at Cavan General Hospital on Tuesday 27 August 2013 following a brief illness.

Having spent his early years in the Ballyconnell area before the family moved to Church Street where he attended Carrigallen National School and he obtained his later part of his primary education there. John Joe at the tender age of fifteen years went to work at McManus' in Church Street, who carried on a very substantial export business of eggs and fowl. John Joe was to remain there for thirty-five years learning the trade of testing and packaging of eggs along with the plucking and preparing of fowl for export.  Following the demise of that business due to trends in England who was the principal outlet, John Joe remained at McManus' working for Chrissie and her husband Michael Hackett in the general grocery, light hardware and fuel business and part of his duties was to man the travelling shop. For the benefit of younger readers, the travelling shop meant bringing a van loaded with groceries and all other wares to every house in every lane and dell where customers would buy their requirements without having to go into town, similar to on-line shopping nowadays. If ever a job was meant for a man this job was surely for John Joe, his patience and fortitude allowed even the most indecisive person to complete their transactions in their own time while he regaled them with the latest happenings in the area using his vivid storytelling skills.  His last run on Saturday evenings was the fuel run, delivering coal, gas and briquettes which often clashed with his favourite radio programme 'Céilí House' requiring deliveries to be suspended temporarily while going into a house to hear it, keeping a watchful ear for his favourite song 'The Stone Outside Dan Murphy's Door'.

Sunday mornings saw him selling newspapers after the 8:30am Mass having a news agency in his own right for the Sunday newspapers. Sunday afternoons was devoted to compiling the local notes for the Anglo Celt and Longford Leader which he did with great efficiency and relating them in his own unique style, often making numerous phone calls to obtain details on a particular subject conscious of how important the notes were, particularly to the house bound or emigrants, he sought to keep them informed of what was happening in the area.

Following the untimely death of Chrisse and Michael Hackett and the ceasing of the business John Joe moved to work at Pat Masterson's Corner House, generally the same duties with the added experience of bar work where it was said his patience and no hurry disposition allowed him to pull the 'perfect pint'. He was a devout Catholic and he made many pilgrimages to holy places with the most recent being Lourdes in June of this year. John Joe loved keeping in contact with his relatives, especially those in USA with his letter writing often including articles from papers and the Ireland’s Own. He contributed many articles over the years which were published in the Leitrim Guardian and ‘A hundred years of Carrigallen School’ book to name but a few.

He was a regular at the Day Care Centre along with the Active Age outings, he enjoyed his retirement with a nice balance of things to do and time to spend but unfortunately all that was cut short with his relatively sudden illness and death. John Joe is predeceased by his three sisters and sympathy is extended to his nieces and nephews, seventeen in total, relatives and friends. His waking at his home in Church Street, Carrigallen saw large numbers attend to show their respects while his funeral Mass in St Mary’s Church, Carrigallen was con-celebrated by neighbouring priests Fr Peter McEntire and Fr Sean McDermott with main celebrant Fr Dan Sheridan (in place of Fr D Murray was hospitalized) again saw a huge turnout. A very fitting tribute was delivered by a friend Harry O along with a much appropriated reflection by one of his nieces. Prayers of the Faithful were delivered by family members along with Cabrini Hackett, Patricia Ledwith and Con Dolan. The well chosen hymns and music was provided by Raymond Hackett and was accompanied by Tommy Hunt. John Joe was laid to rest in Carrigallen cemetery. In John Joe's passing a very familiar part of Carrigallen has gone from our view but not from our hearts and minds. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

The Quare Land

Moth Productions present The Quare Land by John McManus, directed by and starring Seamus O'Rourke with Shane Carroll on Saturday 28 September 2013at 8:30pm in the Breffni Arms Hotel Arva with proceeds going to Saint Christopher's Hospice Cavan. The last thing ninety year old bachelor farmer Hugh Pugh expects, as he takes his first bath in four years, is a visitor. But here he is Rob McNulty, a stressed out developer looking to buy one of Hugh's fields to extend his golf course. A field that Hugh never even knew he owned. A field in Leitrim, of all places! A straightforward enough transaction then, one would imagine, but the cantankerous old Pugh has so many stories to tell, and now he has a captive audience... This play is a must see and will have you rolling around with laughter. Tickets cost only €10 and are available from Breffni Arms Hotel; Lynch's Shop, Arva; Moore's Spar, Ballinagh; and Village Foodstore in Crossdoney.

Any day one gets the opportunity to live life is a good day, and especially when one achieves something wonderful.  That day for a particular young man was the day the Leaving Cert results came out.  That young man was Jack Williamson who received 615 points securing him a place on the Law and French degree course in Trinity College, Dublin. He was a student at Moyne Community School for the past five years and he received his primary education in St Mary’s National School, Arva, Co Cavan. Jack attributed his good results from studying subjects he liked and he would recommend this as a good tip for anyone, and having the support of a dedicated teaching staff also helped. He has wonderful praise for his mam and dad as they were instrumental in introducing him to many various aspects of the arts, culture and heritage, thus broadening his outlook on life and instilling in Jack a love of learning.

Jack is a member of Leitrim Youth Theatre Company Carrigallen where he has performed many times on stage in the Corn Mill Theatre and wrote and directed a play “Liberation of a Rose” for the Company two years ago.  He is a regular visitor to Charley Farrelly's Folk Club which is held the first Friday of each month.  There he can be seen displaying his piano skills, tutored by Mairéad Whelan Cousins, and tin whistle, flute, accordion by Maebh Rehill and The Finnegan School of Music, Carrigallen.

His mother Maura is well known drama-therapist, drama facilitator and playwright. Jim, his father is also well known in the drama circles, having performed with the Corn Mill Theatre Group and Beezneez Theatre Company; and is a renowned director; and pharmacist in the local chemist in Carrigallen.

Jack was a member of the school's debating team following in the footsteps of his late maternal grandfather Benny Reilly, Drumanure, Carrigallen who had a great passion for politics and loved a good debating session with his neighbours and friends. Jack shared his joy with his sister, Lauren Greene who is a student in Carrigallen Vocational School. Well done Jack and wishing you every success as you embark on the long road of life ahead of you!

Congratulations

Congratulations to all student from the parish who received their results and in particular those from Carrigallen Vocational School, where excellent results were achieved. Grades achieved were well above the national average in nearly all the subjects, and in particular the level of distinctions in the L.C.V.P. Were over three times the national average. The excellent results achieved were a combination of the work of the dedicated staff and the hard work put in by the students and support of their parents. Wishing them all well in their future education and endeavours.

School Extension
The Vocational School here in Carrigallen is being extended presently with two general classrooms, one art room along with an extension to the home economics room and office space being provided. Replacement of the tiled roofs in the original school building is currently under way. Chairperson of the Board of Management Paddy O'Rourke is delighted with these works and complimented the staff and care-taking personnel for having managed to grow the enrollment over the last few years in spite of many problems with classroom space and facilities. It was Paddy O'Rourke who in his capacity as Chairperson of Co Leitrim VEC some years ago negotiated the purchase of some adjoining land which made this extension possible. When completed the school will have facilities equal to any other Second Level Schools in the area.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Charley Farrelly's pub quiz team on winning the Aidan Harte Perpetual trophy and to Pat Masterson's team on being the runners up of the Margaret of New Orleans quiz. Questions were set by Tony Fahy, quiz master was Philip McIntyre, time keeper was Helen Corcoran, score keeper was Kieran O'Rourke, and sponsor of the night was Cathal Farrelly. Between the coffee morning and this draw, there has been so much support from everyone and Focus Ireland now has more much needed funds for the great work they do with people who are homeless; are in danger of becoming homeless; or people who once were homeless.

The draw took place on 28 July and the winner of the Facial, kindly sponsored by Ruth Rae of Angelina's Beauty & Holistic Therapy, was won by Mary Hunt and the Handcrafted clock, donated by Stephen O'Brien of Killegar Crafts, was won by Lily Taylor. Carrigallen Summer Festival
Carrigallen 16th Summer Festival will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend with a line-up of events suitable for all the family.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age chose one of the hottest days of the year for a recent day-trip to Carlingford, County Louth! The trip included a visit to Oldbridge, site of the Battle of the Boyne, with a very informative guided tour of the Visitor Centre, which really brought it all to life for us. Later on we had another expert guide to escort us on a tour of the Cooley Peninsula, which, according to Irish mythology, was home to the bull Donn Cúailnge, and the site of the Táin Bo Cúailnge or Cattle Raid of Cooley.  Queen Medb of Connaught played a significant part in the conflict with Ulster over this magnificent animal! We had a very eventful day, but managed to fit in a little retail therapy and came back to the coach with everything from handbags to garden equipment!  The day ended with our 25 members enjoying an excellent dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Carlingford. The Peninsula, the tours and the drive to and from County Louth showed some beautiful parts of our country, but we were happy to come home to ‘Lovely Leitrim’!

Congratulations
Congratulations to Barbara and Barry McGurren, Corglass, Carrigallen on the birth of their baby girl recently, a little sister to Keelan and Tara.  Also, congratulations to the proud grandparents Margaret & Jackie McManus, Bredagh, Carrigallen and Eddie & Carmel McGurren, Corglass.

20 Years a Growing
One of the success stories in our community over the last two decades has been the Day Care Centre operated at the Primary Care Centre. It offers a wonderful service to many, both in terms of opportunity to access services of the GP along with that of other relevant specialists who attend there. It provides a much needed and welcomed social for the elderly, collected at their homes, given a wholesome lunch followed by entertainment consisting of bingo, card playing, storytelling, watching videos and paper reading for those with eyesight problems, before being dropped back to their homes, having had the opportunity to do any shopping or other business they may require in the village.

So it was fitting we should celebrate the twenty years success and this we did commencing with local star David Rawle planting a tree before everyone moved inside for prayers, hymns and blessings from clergy of three denominations. Chairperson Bernie Dolan welcomed back many former staff and committee members who had helped to establish and shape the service in the early days.  Senior HSE official Gearldine Mullarky summed up the success of the Centre by stating that when advising other communities on the provision of such a service she recommends they look at the Carrigallen Model.  Local GP Dr Antoinette Gregan in a very well informed address told us how the concept of such a service became policy for the North Western Healthboard (the HSE predecessor) beginning with the appointment of the late Mons John A. Young to the Board by Health Minister Erskine Childers and the influence Mons Young had in securing funding for such services, which later became national policy in providing for the elderly.

Following the formalities, entertainment flowed with every one doing their party piece in between partaking of the splendid spread of food, truly fitting the day of celebration. Throughout the event it was frequently referred to, that the success of the service is due in no small way to those frontline staff, past and present, which with their good nature and respect for every individual make everyone feel at home there.

Make-A-Wish
Nicolla O'Connell wishes to thank everyone who attended the fundraiser for Make-A-Wish in Mitchell's Bar. The total raised on the night was €2502. Also thank you to those who attended the evening of Social Dancing in the Kilbracken Arms and to all the schools who took part in non uniform days for the charity. With the help of the local ladies who took part in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon to raise funds the combined total of all events is €8000. This will go a long way to making the wishes of seriously ill children come true.

Blessing of the Graves
Blessing of the graves will take place next Sunday 7 July 2013 following the 11:30am Mass in St Mary's Church, Carrigallen.

Frank
Maguire RIP
There was widespread regret in Carrigallen and surrounding parishes at the death of Frank Maguire, Cois Locha, Carrigallen and formerly of Drumderglin, Carrigallen, which has occurred recently in Saint Patrick's Nursing Carrick-onShannon following a short illness. He was a very popular and hard working farmer.  He was a member of the well known Maguire family who were held in high esteem in the parish.  He was the last member of a family of five boys and was son of the late Annie and Hugh Maguire.  Frank emigrated to U.S.A. when he was a young man, joining his older brothers and on the death of brother Hugh, who was carrying on the family farm, he returned and quickly settled in to farm life with his wife Ellie and endeared themselves with their many neighbours and friends. He was a devout Catholic and all his life.  Sympathy is extended to his wife Ellie, sister Josephine Maguire, Ashbourne, Co Meath; nieces and nieces in America and Ireland.  The removal of remains was received at St Mary's Church, Carrigallen by Fr Denis Murray PP and Fr Sean McDermott PP Ballintemple.  Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Murray PP and burial to the adjoining cemetery. May he Rest in Peace.

Crafty Ladies Outing
We had a very memorable day trip to the ISPCA Centre in Kenagh, Longford on Thursday last, followed by lunch in glorious sunshine at Keenan's, Tarmonbarry. What a great way to end our year. The ISPCA kindly gave us a guided tour of the centre and new memorial garden. It was really informative and amazing all the work they do to care for abandoned and mistreated animals throughout Ireland and we were glad to see our fundraising money is going to a very worthy cause. We may even volunteer to help out later in the year! Great day enjoyed by all.

Next coffee morning will resume in September, where we will be busy with our Gathering Stitches event on 24 September 2013 at Corn Mill Theatre Carrigallen - Facebook Gathering Stitches. Before then, catch us at the Margaret of New Orleans fabulous event day next Saturday 15 June, at Tully, Carrigallen. We will have some of our Gathering Stitches patchwork squares on display from around the world, so come take a look, be inspired!

and Ann Harte, on behalf of Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age, recently hosted a Tea Day in their home at Cois Locha in support of the Alzheimer’s Disease Society (Ireland).  An amazing €400 was raised – Alfie and Ann would like to thank everyone for their generous donations and for their support on the day.

Dan Moynihan

The community here in Carrigallen was saddened to hear of the passing of Dan Moynihan which occurred at Cavan General Hospital. Predeceased by his wife Mary almost four years ago, Dan and his wife came to the area almost thirty years ago, living first in Corriga before moving to Bredagh, Carrigallen, where they spent many happy years.  Dan was a Cork man by birth and wife Mary a Wicklow woman, quickly settled into the community with Dan working as caretaker of the Community Centre where he endeared himself to all he came in contact with.  As a Cork man he took great pride in the success of the Rebel County on the hurling and football field. A devout Catholic Dan made many pilgrimages to Knock with his late wife, but sadly following her passing he seemed to loose the zest for life and passed away peacefully following a short illness.  Following his funeral Mass Dan was laid to rest alongside his beloved wife Mary in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Carrigallen.  Sympathy is extended to his family including his brother-in-law Charlie Doyle and family, Corriga. May his gentle soul Rest in Peace

Clifford transferred from Buccaneers Rugby Club on Athlone to Longford Rugby Club. His brother Keith Richardson has played a number of seasons there and won Player of the Year in 2010. Clifford played the league campaign and reached the promotion play-offs but unfortunately lost, closest promotion opportunity for the club to date.  They had a great winning run in the Leinster Provisional Towns cup, one of the longest and oldest running cup competitions in Iris rugby.

Having reached the final for the first time since 1932 for the Longford club it was a great occasion for the club and all its members. Clifford was nominated and won Longford Rugby Club Player of the Year 2013.  Congratulations! He has been selected for the Leinster Junior Rugby team, who will compete in an inter-provisional cup competition between Munster, Connacht and Ulster.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age continue to be very ‘active’!  We have recently completed our ten week Yoga Course – a big thank you to Julie Smith, our Instructor. All of us who attended the Course are feeling the benefit, both physically and mentally. Maintaining all that physical activity we are planning a visit to the 10 Pin Bowling Ally in Longford later this month; and a short time ago twenty two of our members got great pleasure from a night out at ‘the dogs’ in Mullingar.  Not too much physical activity for us there, but some of us had a profitable night out, and we all enjoyed the dinner! Planning is well ahead for some day trips, and suggestions for our three day break later on this summer are under discussion – Maura O’Rourke, our new Social Secretary, has it all well in hand!

Celebration of Fifty Years of Priesthood
On Sunday, 14 April 3013 Father Sean McTiernan, a native of the parish of Carrigallen, Co Leitrim, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood in a concelebrated Mass at St Mary's Church, Carrigallen.  Co-celebrants were Fathers Patrick Hagan and Tom McDonnell, his colleagues in St Patrick's Missionary Society, Kiltegan, Co Wicklow.  The Mass was attended by his siblings and close family members.  Afterwards all assembled for refreshments and joviality at the birthplace of Sean's late mother at Bredagh, Carrigallen. Fr Sean, the first of a family of five John (Jack) and Mary Elizabeth (Maimie) McTiernan was born in the village of Carrigallen in 1936.  He completed his Primary Education in Carrigallen National School and after which he commenced second level education at Moyne Latin School, Co Longford where at Inter Cert level he won a scholarship to St Mel's College, Longford.  This great achievement ended his daily cycling routine to Moyne.

After leaving Cert at St Mel's College, Sean, in response to a call from God, decided to enter St Patrick's Missionary Society where he commenced his studies for the priesthood. After seven years of study he was ordained a priest in April 1963 at Kiltegan, Co Wicklow. Following his ordination Sean was assigned as a missionary to Abakaliki, in South East Nigeria.  In July 1967 a bitter civil war erupted in that country and continued until January 1970.  Those years proved to be very difficult and dangerous for missionaries in Nigeria who endeavoured to remain loyal to their flocks.  Those missionaries suffered great personal trauma and stress throughout that period. Sean returned to Ireland at that time and commenced a process of recuperation and recovery.

Sean was then assigned a teaching post at Moyne Latin School after which he took up appointments in various parishes in Roscommon and Mullingar.  He was then appointed to a parish close to Reykjavik, Iceland where he also secured a degree in Icelandic Studies in the local University.  He is now retired and living at the Society Headquarters in Kiltegan, Co Wicklow. A special word of thanks goes to Father Denis Murray PP., Carrigallen, Co Leitrim for making available St Mary's Church for the occasion.  Sincere thanks to Ann and Francie Murray and also to John Morrow for their assistance in organising and preparing the Church for the celebration.

Cleaning up in Carrigallen
Saturday last saw a large clean up of the approach roads to our village with the teenagers from the Foróige Club led by Sean and Patricia Ledwith along with local Cllr Paddy O’Rourke. Many people have been commenting on how much litter had accumulated on the road sides over the recent months and indeed much of what was collected on Saturday last was of a household nature rather than simply litter, that people would dump such material along a roadside is inexcusable and those who do so should think of the damage they are doing to their own environment. Well done to those who took part in the clean up particularly the Foróige members. They are the generation who will lead the change of attitude on such issues.

Sympathy
Sympathy is extended to Tommy McGuckian and family, Killahurk, Carrigallen on the death of his brother Joe which occurred in Cork recently.  May he Rest in Peace.

Death of Francie Murphy
There was wide spread regret in Carrigallen area and surrounding parishes at the news of the unexpected death of Francie Murphy, Drumbreanlis, Carrigallen which occurred on Tuesday 26 March 2013, while he was out helping his brother with their livestock he suddenly became ill and passed away in a short time.  Francie was a popular and hard working man but was also on hand to help a neighbour in need.  He took a very keen interest in fishing, hunting and pheasant shooting.  He lived along with his brother Jimmy in their very comfortable home at Drumbreanlis where all visitors were given a Céad Míle Fáilte, where many hours was spent discussing many different topics.  The district is so much the poorer at the passing of this great gentleman.  May he Rest in Peace. Sympathy is extended to his brothers; Jimmy, Carrigallen, Michael, England; sister May, England; Sister-in-law Cathleen; nieces, relatives and friends. The removal of remains and funeral following service on Holy Thursday to the family burial ground in Errew Cemetery was large.  Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr Denis Murray PP on Tuesday evening 2 April 2013 in St Mary’s Church.

Visiting Anglers
Earlier this year Carrigallen had two very popular anglers as visitors in the persons of Gerry Hopkinsons and Jimmy Harris from Leeds, England.  Both men are no strangers to Carrigallen and are well known among our local anglers and why not, as they are coming to Carrigallen for the past twenty years, making two visits some years.  Gerry and Jimmy claim that they know exactly where all the good fish hang out in Carrigallen, and even though their visit was early they had some very good catches. The men with big smiles mentioned about one of their early visits to Carrigallen.  As they were travelling along the road they spied this lovely fishing water at the bottom of a field.  They stopped and decided to give it a go.  After entering the field they met the owner and enquired of him if he would charge fishermen who would fish those waters?  No was the reply, “I don’t charge, but there is a bull down there charges”. Gerry and Jimmy are high in their praise of their landlady Ann McGovern, Greenville House, Carrigallen who look after them on their visits to Carrigallen and assured her of a later visit in the summer.

This short play is set in a futuristic but desolate land. The adults are gone and the children are running this barren place. But all is not well. They have forgotten how they got here and even how long they've been here. They have divided themselves into four groups, the Learners, the Scavengers, the Mechanics and the Healers. Upcoming Events in Corn Mill Theatre
Corcaghan Players, Monaghan present Carnival at Glenaduff written by Padraic McIntyre on Saturday 9 March.

The action is framed around the carnival dance set in the 1960s in Glenaduff, Cavan. The marquee is up. The local boss Man Packie McGovern is chief organiser and the proceeds are going to the local Catholic Church. Fr Flynn, the local parish priest, is there to keep an eye on the proceedings. The dance is about to kick off. The girls are dolled up, the lads are getting a few pints in before the dance and the Boyle Brothers are gunning for John Joe. While the band is in the throes of performing a selection of tunes, a brawl erupts and all hell breaks loose.

On Friday 15 March Sanctuary Players, Tarmonbarry present Highest House on the Mountain a play written by John B. Keane. This play explores the strained family relations when a son returns from England on a visit, bringing his new bride with him.

Then on Sunday 17 March & Monday 18 March (in aid of St Joseph's Football Club) Moth Productions present For Club and County written and directed by Seamus O'Rourke.

Now just because Arthur Polanski is the spit of Ritchie Brown, Tanaree's dual football and hurling star. And just because Arthur Polanski played in goal for the Polish International Under-21 Soccer Team. And just because Ritchie Browne is after doing in his knee while dipping sheep two weeks before the final. And just because Arthur Polanski is not a member of the county, let alone the Tanaree GAA Club. Doesn't mean Arthur Polanski can't play in the final. All we need to do is turn him into Ritchie Brown. And we don't need him to talk English. We just need him to talk GAA!

Doors open at 8:00pm and all performances start at 8:30pm.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age held their Annual General Meeting at the Health Centre on 11 February 2013. The Chairperson, Eileen Ward, gave a brief outline of the activities during the year, including visits to the Bloom Festival in Phoenix Park in May; the Organic Centre, Rossinver, Parkes Castle and the Folk Museum in Ballinamore in July as well as a 3-day break to Wexford in August. The Digital Switchover in October had been well catered for with Lorraine Mulvey, the Digital Outreach Champion working with the Leitrim Development Company, explaining to us exactly what was going to happen and the steps, if any, we needed to take to ensure continuing to watch those favourite TV programmes!

We also had an entertaining session with Susie Minto entitled 'Sole to Soul' – emphasising that every pair of shoes has an interesting tale to tell…while Julie lead us gently through six sessions of Armchair Yoga (to be repeated very soon). With safety and security in mind we welcomed a demonstration on a device that could photograph every visitor coming to your front door, and information on personal alarms.

Our final event for 2012 was the very enjoyable Christmas Dinner, this year held at Mitchell's Restaurant in Carrigallen. During the evening a raffle was held raising over €300 in aid of the local St Vincent de Paul charity. Ann Harte, our Treasurer, then presented the accounts for the year, detailing income and expenditure – we have a small balance to carry forward for the coming year and plan to apply for funding to enable the group to continue providing varied activities for our members.

Chairperson, Eileen Ward; Treasurer, Ann Harte and Secretary, Elizabeth Mulligan all stated that they wished to stand down from their positions to enable 'fresh blood' onto the Committee. Following discussions elections were held for the Chairperson Alfie Harte elected, John Lynch as Assistant Chairperson and Secretary Maura O'Rourke elected; Valerie Elsegood was elected as PRO and Assistant Secretary. It was unanimously proposed, and agreed that Ann Harte should be elected as Treasurer for another year. The new Officers took their seats and discussions followed, including suggestions for forthcoming activities and trips, to be agreed at a later date.

Alfie Harte, the new Chairman, closed the meeting by thanking the outgoing Chairperson and Secretary (and the continuing Treasurer), for all their hard work over the previous years, including the various meetings and forums they had attended on behalf of the group.

Eugene (Geno) Charles RIP

There was widespread shock and sadness in the area following the death of Geno Charles who was a familiar and popular member of the community. When he failed to return home a large search of the Aughavas and Carrigallen area was mounted led by the Gardai along with relatives, friends and neighbours from across many parishes. As the search continued hopes of finding him safe began to fade and eventually when the discovery was made it sent shock waves through the community, with everyone left wondering how such a gentle soul as Geno could have been unfortunate to meet such an untimely death. He was waked at his residence in Diffin, Aughavas until his remains were moved to St Joseph's Church on Saturday 19 January 2013 with very large number of people attending on both days. Sympathy is extended to his brothers, sisters, relatives and friends. May he Rest in Peace.

Butterflies Special Abilities Project nominated for Epic Award
Butterflies Special Abilities Summer project has been running for nine years during the month of August in Killeshandra Community Resource Centre, Co Cavan. The group caters for children from 5 years of age, teenagers and adults. The aim of the project is to bring professional arts to participants in a unique small group setting, in a supportive and creative environment. Also it allows parents/carers/siblings a little respite. To date the participants have experienced art forms of drama, dance, movement, music, crafts, drumming, mime, and film.

The summer months can be a difficult time for parents, carers, when the routine of school is gone, and finding activities to suit a child/teenager with special needs can be very difficult, particularly when they are only comfortable in small group setting. The group have participants from Leitrim, Cavan, and Longford. There was great excitement last week when the project was nominated for an Epic Award. Epic Awards are an initiative of Voluntary Arts. The Award takes into consideration commitment of people who are passionate about bringing the Arts to communities, their time, commitment given to running projects, and the promotion of art activates.

Butterflies are among seven from hundreds nominated for this Award. We need the public’s support to help us take home the “Peoples Choice Award” we need you to go to epicawards.co.uk and find finalist, and click on like for Butterflies Special Abilities Award. You can vote everyday from now until 28th January. Local Drama Facilitator and Playwright Maura Williamson is one of the founders of Butterflies, answering a need to have her daughter Lauren involved in arts activities, in small group settings over the summer months and to give her the extra tools and confidence to survive in large mainstream group setting. We wish them every success in bringing this award home.

Thank You!

The singers outside the Corn Mill Theatre during Ride On! and A Matter of Practice performances, would like to thank the casts and crews, writers and directors of both plays and the Corn Mill Theatre Company for allowing them to perform.  A total of €1,022.70 was collected and distributed evenly between St Vincent De Paul, Community Care and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Special thanks to the local Community and theatre goers for their generosity.  The Singers hope that the change from the carols to ballad and popular songs after Christmas didn’t upset too many of the patrons, too late for carols in January, but the three charities were very thankful.

Death of Edmund Patterson
There is widespread regret in the area and surrounding parishes at the news of the unexpected death of Edmund Patterson, Drumbrick, Carrigallen, which occurred at Galway University Hospital recently.  He was a very hard working and popular farmer who was held in high esteem with all who kneew him and was always present to lend a helping hand to a neighbour in need. Edmund endeared himself to the young and the old. He had a great memory and could relate and relive many football matches and give details of who played well and who scored.

He was also an angler of note, and was a member of the Newtowngore Gun Club and just a few days before his illness he was elected President of the Club. Indeed the parish is much the poorer with the passing of this fine gentleman. Sympathy is extended to his sisters Patricia Maxwell and Adeline Patterson, England; Beatrice Wilson, Killeshandra; nieces and nephews; relatives and friends.  A large guard of honour on the arrival of his remains at Killegar Church by Newtowngore Gun Club and friends. Funeral Service was officiated by Rev Alison Calvin, Killeshandra.  May he Rest in Peace.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age held their annual Christmas Party, just before Christmas, in Mitchell's Bar and Restaurant, Main Street, Carrigallen. As usual everyone had a wonderful time – good food, good company, good entertainment, especially some of the jokes told by our Chairman and Treasurer after the meal! A number of prizes had been collected and donated over the past few months, and these were raffled after dinner, with €280 raised for our local St Vincent de Paul charity. Our thanks go to Elizabeth Mulligan for organising the evening for us, and to all the staff at Mitchells for giving us a lovely meal and making sure it all went so smoothly.

Safest Place in Ireland
According to an article in one of the National Tabloids on Saturday last, based on figures released from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), Carrigallen has the lowest crime rate in Ireland. In 2011 Carrigallen did not suffer any serious public order offences; it had the lowest number of burglaries and five times less crime than some of gangland areas. Figures for the Leitrim-Sligo Garda division show that Carrigallen had the lowest reports of burglaries, rape and assaults up to September last. The low crime rate is due to the 'Text Alert' system which is in place and also to the fact that the people of Carrigallen are very good neighbours and they look out for each other.

European Award for Hugh
Hugh Maguire a butcher from Ashbourne, Co Meath, whose parents hailed from Carrigallen, has claimed first prize in an European Sausage Making Competition, fending off competition from over 700 butchers from all over Europe. Hugh's parents the late Liam Maguire originally from Calloughs and mother Josephine a member of the Maguire family from Drumderglin whose brother Frank still lives with his wife Eileen (Ellie) in Carrigallen. Hugh's parents moved to Co Meath in the 1960's but were frequent visitors to the area, having a number of relations in the parish. Hugh's late uncle Barney ran a successful butchery in Killeshandra for over forty years, so perhaps excellence in food processing runs in the family. Well done Hugh from all your friends in Carrigallen.
