On behalf of the local arts and crafts community, thank you for your support for our Craft Fair which was held last Sunday in Carrigallen. A big thank you to you all who donated so generously towards the Carrigallen Quilt. A total of €850 was raised for NW Hospice and ISPCA Longford. The 'Carrigallen Quilt' was raffled off and was won by Mary Ryan, Bawnboy, Co Cavan. The quilt has inspired us to make another 'international' quilt called Gathering Stitches for The Gathering 2013. Anyone who would like to get involved or know of any contacts who would be interested in this unique venture, come join us or follow us on Facebook. Remember for Christmas, a gift made from the heart is more valuable and appreciated. Happy Christmas!

LYTC Carrigallen
The Leitrim Youth Theatre Company (LYTC) Carrigallen theatre visit to “Ride On” written by Seamus O’Rourke, directed by Padraic McIntyre and performed by Nomad in association with “Livin Dred” Theatre Company at the Corn Mill Theatre Carrigallen on 11 December 2012 was funded by “Go See” NAYD.

The invite to attend this production went out to the three LYTC groups, Carrigallen, Carrick on Shannon, and Manorhamilton.  Due to various problems, only LYTC Carrigallen attended.  Eighteen members plus Leader Maura Williamson and assistant leader Geraldine Lennon attended with the group.

The cast consisted of Deirdre Monaghan, Patrick Ryan, Clare Monnelly, John Olohan, Ian Lloyd Anderson, and Seamus O’Rouke. They brought this play alive and were rewarded with roars of constant laughter from a packed audience at the Corn Mill Theatre.
Following the performance the cast over a few cokes, tea, and coffee gave generously of their time to accommodate a questions and answers session with LYTC Carrigallen. There were wonderful stories from John Olohan, and Deirdre Monaghan, plus the group really identified with Clare Monnelly as she is not to long out of The Gaiety School of acting, and came from youth drama.  She also starred with our own home grown David Rawle as Martin Moone in “Moone Boy” so conversation about film verses theatre came up.  General feedback from LYTC Carrigallen afterwards was great.  They were impressed that the actors gave so much of their time, were so ordinary and chatted away.  Seamus O’Rourke would be known to them all as a former actor with the amateur drama group at the Corn Mill Theatre.

LYTC Carrigallen would like to thank NAYD “Go See” fund for making a visit to professional theatre possible.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age Continue to be Very ‘Active’!
At a recent meeting dates were arranged for our next visit to Longford Ten-Pin Bowling Centre (followed by tea/coffee and sandwiches), our Christmas Party (Mitchells this year), and a Film Night in the Screen Room at the Corn Mill Theatre – with refreshments, of course!  The proposed film we’re going to see is ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’; this has had rave reviews since release, so we’re all looking forward to a night out with a difference.

All these events will be happening before the end of December, but in the meantime we will be continuing with our Yoga Sessions on Monday evenings.  We have all felt the benefit of this gentle, but stimulating, form of exercise and hope that funding can be identified for further sessions in 2013 – with Julie, of course.

Charlie McGirl RIP
There was widespread regret in the area upon hearing the passing of Charlie McGirl, Camber, Aughavas or 'the man with the horses to those less familiar'. Being of a determined nature Charlie battled on despite having very poor health in recent years, when a lesser man might have given up.  He was a lover of all things traditional.  Charlie was a republican of unswerving loyalty, a performer of traditional music where he played the bodhrán in his band 'Charlie and the Boys' entertaining at many worthy fund raisers and often in the bars here in Carrigallen.  Wren night or St Stephen's Day was the highlight of his musical year and was quick to proclaim his disapproval of an RTÉ presenter who referred to it as Boxing Day on one occasion.

Cattle breeding again saw him stick with the traditional Herefords where he achieved considerable success claiming prizes at many local shows.  The gardening and growing of oats was another area he excelled in but it was the horse he shared most of his working life. He breed, trained, rode them and he even took part in the odd impromptu race across a few fields following a hard day between the handles of the plough. On many occasions he provided transport for a variety of passengers ranging from Santa at Christmas parties to many brides anxious to make it to the Church on time.  And so it was fitting that a beautiful horse drawn hearse was used to bear his remains to the cemetery in Aughavas following what was a very well attended funeral Mass which in itself was a celebration of a life well led.  Sympathy is extended to his wife, sons, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, relatives and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

Jimmy McGerty RIP
There was a universal feeling of sadness throughout the parish and beyond as word filtered through that James (Jimmy) McGerty had died at his residence in Cornafest, Carrigallen on Sunday 16 September 2012.  He was a well known and much loved figure and neighbour in this community.

Jimmy was born in the townland of Annagh. There he was raised by his parents and grew up alongside his sisters Ita, Babs the late Peggy; and his late brothers Jack and Michael. He attended the local school and St Patrick's College Cavan from 1948 to 1950.  As was customary in those times at a very early age Jimmy set out into the world of work. In his years of health Jimmy was one of those fortunate people who could turn his hand to anything. He was well known as a builder and he was also one of the first men in this part of the world to get involved in the selling of double glazed windows. With his jolly personality, his good humour and his gift for telling a story, Jimmy was a formidable sales man. He was an adventurous man who was always willing to plough a new furrow and for a short time he gave snail farming a go. Together with his wife Lottie, they did B&B for many years at Cornafest and Jimmy had a great way with the fishermen who came every year from England and further afield to stay with them.

Jimmy married the late Madge Masterson. Madge however predeceased Jimmy at a relatively young age. Jimmy was fortunate to find love again when he met Lottie. They have shared 28 years of married life together. Jimmy loved to socialise and meet people. He was good company to be with. He loved to sing a song and he retained a great affection for the old Latin Hymns such as Panes Angelicas and Ave Maria, and was a great man to give a recitation and among his favourites was ‘Dangerous Dan McGrew.’ Jimmy was a member of the Community Players and performed on stage on numerous occasions.  He was a cultured man who had a great love of Opera, Pavarotti being his favourite.

Illness struck fifteen years ago when Jimmy suffered a stroke. It was a hard blow to Jimmy and to Lottie.  He followed doctors’ orders and he did everything possible to retain his independence and make his condition manageable. He was indomitable and determined and throughout the course of his infirmity he showed tremendous courage and fortitude.  Jimmy's carers, friends and family were a great support throughout the years.

Sympathy is extended to his wife Lottie; sisters Ita Gray and Babs Mimnagh; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces; nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews; relatives and friends. Removal of his remains from his residence to St Mary's Church, Carrigallen and funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr Ultan McGoohan, assisted by Fr Ned Whelan, Carlow (Lottie's cousin) and Fr Patsy Young (former Carrigallen curate).  Burial was to the adjoining cemetery.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the Carrigallen Community Text Alert Scheme was held in the Community Centre on Thursday 20 September 2012 with a very large attendance. Chairperson Neville Patterson got proceedings underway and a detailed report from secretary Enda Lyons was read to the members which showed that nearly 300 people had signed up to this crime prevention initiative. Carrick-on-Shannon Sergeant Turlough Bruin was in attendance as well as our local Garda Sinéad McLoon. Sergeant Bruin stated that the Carrigallen scheme had been introduced in a number of other areas in the County and surrounding areas and that peoples’ vigilance and reporting of any suspect activity have been of great benefit to the Garda and he urged people to remain part of this worthwhile scheme.  Outgoing Secretary Enda Lyons informed the meeting that he wouldn't be seeking re-election as he had other time constraints. The new Committee for the year ahead is Chairperson Neville Patterson, Secretary Martina McCann and Finance remains in the capable hands of Bonnie O’Rourke.  Memberships are now due for renewal and if you have not done so please renew it now. Johnny Fyfe RIP
Johnny Fyfe, who lived in a little cottage on the Killegar estate, in Carrigallen, was probably the last person in Ireland to get electricity into his home! It had never bothered him. He was completely self-sufficient. A beautiful vegetable garden, with specimen cabbages, onions and lettuce; pheasant, duck, rabbit, pigeon and woodcock which he shot and had on the table that evening (you wouldn't get it in the Savoy Hotel in London!); fish from the local Calloughs Trout Lake (fishing club) of which he was a president and founder member—not to mention the many types of coarse fish caught far and wide from Lake Kilnemar and the Glasshouse on his homeland Killegar to the many competitions he entered including Belturbet and further afield. Before he had the electricity, he worked his television off a car battery, and everything else from a small generator. Logs cut, drawn and stacked by himself keeping his sturdy Stanley in flame and always a beautiful homely heat in his house with a kettle on the hob, baking his trout!. He was a truly self -sufficient person of the modern age. In his earlier days he had motor bikes and loved all of his cars. His dogs were legendary! Nipper the most famous, Topsy, Susie, Bouncer, Lassie, Widgie, Judy and Darkie were some of them and Molly was his last one, currently being well cared for.

Johnny won the local Darts Cup Competition, first started in 1964 by John Joe Dolan at The West End Bar in Carrigallen. He told me that Dart throwers would come from far and wide to throw there, arriving at 7:30 in the evening and not have the first round completed by the early hours. "There could be up to a hundred throwers of an evening then" he said. This trophy was played for in the eight weekends leading up to Easter and Johnny won it five times, once in each decade, right up to the millennium year of 2000 when he last won it!

He featured recently in the book 'Vanishing Ireland' by Turtle Bunberry and this accolade was well deserved. The tales that Johnny had to tell about life in Killegar could fill many a book. There was no better loved man by all of the Killegar and Carrigallen,  Corawallen, Drumeela, Newtowngore and Killeshandra communities than Johnny Fyfe.

The "Johnny Fyfe Perpetual Darts Trophy", thrown for, for many years in John Joe Dolan's in Carrigallen, until it closed, is to be re-lit in the Hill Tavern in Killeshandra in Johnny's memory. It begins in October, so keep an eye out in Local Notes for details. People used to come long distances just to say that hey had played in the Johnny Fyfe tournament. They will again! Calloughs Trout Club will be running a special tournament in Johnny's honor and have commissioned a memorial piece.

Johnny had so many close friends that it would be impossible to mention them all of them without leaving somebody out - but we'll try... His sister Jennie and her husband George were pals as well as family as was his cousin Richard Venton and his wife Nerrida, Ann & Michael McGerty, Alan Taylor and his wife Lil, Mary O'Connell with Daniel and Brigid, Martin Ruane and his wife, Janet & Tony Fahy, Tom & Jean Humphreys, Sue Kilbraken, Liam & Iona Fahy, Nugent O'Reilly, Ethel and Clem Humphreys,  the Kiernan families including Johnny, Peter,  Monica, Margaret, Bridgett, Rose Ellen and Philomena (and spouses) , Bridie & Martin Gallagher, Paul Komierowski, Michael and Cabrini Hackett, Paddy & Angela McGovern, Mickey Flynn, John McGerty, Theresa McGerty, Michael and Gene Doherty—and all of the Doherty, Grimes and Gray families, John Joe Dolan and his family, Richard Nixon, Cathal Farrelly, Christopher Godley, Sean Godley, Sheila and Brian Brady, MC Hardcastle, Terry Reynolds, members of the Gun Clubs, Angling Clubs and Darts Clubs in Carrigallen and Newtowngore, and Killeshandra  etc. There are probably hundreds more…(regrets for any left out)—Johnny would probably not have believed how many people were devoted to him!

The community would like to thank the the Church of Ireland members at the Old School House beside Killegar Church for the wonderful refreshments provided for everyone after the Funeral service and burial, in Johnny's honour. Johnny Fyfe (4 October 1930-14 September 2012) is laid to rest in his beloved Killegar at the Church of Ireland Killegar Parish Church grounds. May he Rest in Peace.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age had an unusual workshop recently – all about shoes, entitled Sole to Soul: You do the Walkin’, Let Your Shoes do the Talkin! Susie Minto, the workshop leader (who is also a story teller and writer) had asked us all to bring in a pair of shoes that had particular meaning for us – wedding shoes, dancing shoes, walking shoes – any footwear that might have a ‘story’ to tell.

Susie told us some stories relating to her own shoes; they were well travelled, been to other countries with her and kept her warm and comfortable on numerous walks and hikes here in Ireland as well as other parts of the world.  Sadly they were now worn out, but those shoes served as a reminder to her of places visited and people she had met over the years.

Members had shoes and runners with their own stories and memories – everything from very special runners that had helped in the recovery of a broken ankle, to gardening boots, now well worn, which provided their owner with memories of the trials and tribulations of a garden created from land covered in rushes that had once been a potato field! Susie sowed all sorts of seeds in our minds – shoes certainly do resurrect long-forgotten memories, and who knows, maybe they even ‘talk’ to each other?

Support Group

Death of Two Carrigallen Sisters

Training Workshops for Community & Voluntary Groups
Leitrim Development Company announces training workshops for members of community and voluntary organisations and groups. Community and voluntary organisations are facing ever increasing difficulties in carrying out their activities and projects. Funders and other support agencies are also insisting that voluntary groups meet high standards in applying for and drawing down financial support. Members of local groups need to make sure that they are well informed and equipped for the challenges that confront them.

This series of training workshops – Getting Groups Organised – has been designed with these needs in mind. The workshops aim to give group members a good understanding of the issues involved in managing their organisation, dealing with funding applications, controlling finances, preparing project plans, dealing with the legal issues that concern voluntary groups, and coping with tendering and procurement.

The workshops will be of value to groups that are contemplating making funding applications, becoming legally incorporated, or drawing up business plans. In particular, it will be of great value to groups who are considering making LEADER funding applications. It will be suitable for members of festival groups, tidy town groups, development associations, and such like.

The workshops will be held weekly, over six weeks, at two separate venues – Leitrim Village Community Centre, and the Bee Park Resource Centre, Manorhamilton. They will be delivered by Gearóid Mac Eochaidh, who has wide experience in the community development field. The workshops commence on Tuesday 9 October 2012 (Leitrim Village) and Thursday 11 October 2012 (Manorhamilton). The course is free of charge, but it is necessary to indicate your intention to attend in advance. Book your place by getting in contact with Leitrim Development Company on 071-9641770 or email Karen at ksweeney@ldco.ie.

Tidy Towns Report
The recently published Tidy Towns Adjudicators' Report saw the village achieve a modest increase in the overall markings, thanks to the efforts of a few people.

The Library on Main Street along with the Kilbrackan Arms Hotel came in for special compliments while 'Little Acorns Childcare Centre at Cluain Álainn also caught the adjudicators's eye for all the right reasons.  Well done to all there.  Meanwhile, the allotments at Barley Field along with the waste minimisation methods being practised there really hit the spot with the judges (it should be noted that recent Tidy Towns competition has changed emphasis from simply viewing buildings and street scapes to a more environmentally focused programme). The Green Flags achieved by both the National and Vocational Schools were acknowledged and encouragment to go to the next level was offered.  The involvement of the Foróige Club in the Spring Clean up sponsored by An Táisce, was viewed as a very positive thing given that younger people are more aware of environmental issues than their elders tend to be.

Room for improvement included the frequent removal of cigarette butts from where they tend to accumulate outside some licenced premises, along with the cleaning of some road signs which have dust and grime attached to them.  While a notice board indicating the various species of wild life and plant life which are to be found in and around the Town Lake area would be desirable, perhaps sited over looking the lake on the Mohill Road.

Many readers will be aware that the local group who submit the Annual Tidy Towns application have secured the help of a consultant to assist in preparing a five year work plan to maximise the potential of the village within the competition during the next few years, this work is partially funded by Leitrim Development Company and when complete should form the basis of a realistic and achievable plan.  There will be more details on this later, but in the meanwhile keep up the good work!

Carrigallen/Drumeela Active Age
The Carrigallen/Drumeela Active age had their annual autumn break recently. The venue this year was Wexford town and they stayed in White's Hotel right in the centre of this lovely old historic town. Among the places they visited were the Hook Lighthouse which is the oldest Lighthouse in Ireland.  The guide gave an interesting and humorous account of how things were in the past.  Most of the visitors climbed the steps to each floor and felt that it was well worth the effort. The Dunbrody Ship experience was very enlightening and they boarded the ship with their own named ticket.  Later they were entertained by two actresses, one posing as a first class passenger and another as a steerage.  The conditions were very poor for the latter.

Ros Tapestry was a colourful and historical event. There are dedicated stitchers who continue this intricate work throughout the country at the moment. The National Heritage Park was next on their list.  The guide was dressed in historical garb, sword, knives and everything at the ready.

They visited the sites of Stone, Iron and Bronze Age and got a glimpse of how simple and primitive life was during this period.  The guide interacted with the group and they even had a temporary wedding scene! It is known that Wexford is famous for it's hurling and some of the group got their photographs taken with some famous people!  All in all it was a great break for the Active Age and they hope to do it all again soon.  All credit goes to their hardworking secretary Elizabeth Mulligan.

Death of Mrs Mildred Suabey

Death of Former Teacher
The death has occurred of Mrs Kitty Feeney of Ballinamore who was a teacher of Home Economics in Carrigallen Vocational School from 1968 to 1992. Kitty is fondly remembered by the hundreds of pupils she taught for her down-to-earth approach and for her friendly personality. In the days when there were no guidance counsellors Kitty fulfilled the role of mentor, advocate and career advisor for the many students who sought her advice. She regularly received letters from past pupils and replied to all of them. Kitty had a great sense of humour and was a very entertaining storyteller. In her younger days she acted with the Lifford Players while teaching in Strabane. Anecdotes of Kitty’s wit and repartee abound. One past pupil recalled an occasion when Kitty directed a question to her in class inviting her to suggest an ingredient she would use to enhance the flavour. The inattentive student who just heard the end of the question answered ‘parsley’ to which Kitty replied: ‘when you make the cake with the parsley in it bring me in a slice!’

Kitty loved style, had a great interest in antiques and art and she travelled to auctions all over the country.  She greatly enjoyed drama, music and dancing and the songs of her native Galway were especially close to her heart. In 1979 Kitty and her family suffered a huge blow when her eldest son Joseph died suddenly at the age of sixteen. Her large network of friends from every county was a great support to her in the bleak times that followed. Her husband Ignatius died in 2009 and she is survived by her daughter Sheila, sons Colm and Kevin and their families and by her brother Louis McLoughlin. She was laid to rest alongside Iggy and Joseph in Ahamlish cemetery, Sligo on Tuesday last and the sweet strains of ‘Galway Bay’ provided a fitting serenade on her final journey. May she Rest in Peace. Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age went on another one of their famous outings last month – this time to the Organic Centre in Rossinver; Parkes Castle on the shores of Loch Gill and the Glenview Museum just outside Ballinamore. The three venues all had something for everyone - we benefited from information about the best way to get the most out of our gardens, including fruit, flowers and vegetables. This was followed by a tour of historic Parkes Castle and the stories of the lives of just some of those who have lived and worked there since the 17th century.  The day finished not far from home at Glenview Museum, with an enthusiastic tour of the Museum – did you know there are many artefacts housed there that have been sourced or donated locally?  Our tour was followed by a delicious dinner in the restaurant - booking essential! Our day, and the journey, emphasised just how beautiful County Leitrim is. Stunning scenery, a warm welcome everywhere we went – and the weather was kind to us too!  ‘Lovely Leitrim’ at its very best.

Maureen was a member of the Kiernan family, Kilbracken and moved to Cloncorrick on the occasion of her marriage to her husband Larry.  She assisted her husband in the quarry business.  She enjoyed life and was a very popular member of the community; also she was a very good and generous neighbour.  Maureen had a wonderful sense of humour, loved taking part in pub and table quizzes, and doing the daily crosswords.  She was a member of the local ICA and helped in organising many events.  Maureen was an avid reader and she contributed many articles for local publications and she was a member of the editorial staff of the book ‘A Hundred Years of Carrigallen School.

Sympathy is extended to her husband Larry; sisters Margaret Gormley, Boston, USA, Monica Philipps, Connecticut, USA, Philomena Gormley, Pulladoey, Longford, Rose Ellen Duffy, Errew, Carrigallen, Bridget Kiernan, London, England; brothers Johnny Kiernan, Kilbrackan, Carrigallen and Peter Kiernan, Corlespratten, Arva, Co Cavan; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; relatives and friends. Row by Row
Saturday 28 July 2012 last was a special day for the residents of the 'Barley Field' Carrigallen with the official opening of their allotments. The project began last year with a request to Leitrim County Council to use an overgrown plot of ground located to the rear of the housing, for a community garden.  The first job was the reclaiming of the area which was badly overgrown for thirty years.  This was completed with some welcome financial assistance from the Leitrim Development Company. The next step was to fence and secure the area, rotivate it and dig in some farm manure. The winter passed and by spring time the ground was ready for first planting with practically every family in the estate taking an allotment. Leitrim Development Company again through the offices  of their development worker Beirne Donohoe supported the provision of a poly tunnel, and so in spite of a very difficult growing season visitors on the opening day were treated to a marvellous display of every kind of vegetable possible, along with a few more adventurous items such as tomatoes and pumpkins. The official opening was conducted by local Councillor Paddy O’Rourke, he paid tribute to the Resident’s Association who had initiated the project along with Leitrim County Council and Leitrim Development Company (who were represented by Bernie Donohoe) and suggested that the idea should be promoted throughout the County as there were very many benefits apart from the obvious financial one, including the sense of ownership and achievement it gives a communit. Fr Dennis Murray PP was on hand to bless the 'allotments' and following a few words of encouragement and congratulations he led the assembled in a rapturous rendering of Tommy Mackem’s Garden song 'Row by Row'. Refreshments were provided by the Residents Association and went down a treat before the eager workers returned to their respective plots.

It’s a play about rural Irish life and the way we cope with the inevitable, it’s a play about how life and death and humour and love and sadness all live in the same house together and then a strange thing happens. Young Peter O’Loughlin
This was the man referred to in Percy French’s ‘The Mountains of Mourne’.  Again Percy takes a comical look at life in London. He describes his meeting with Peter O’Loughlin in London. According to Percy, Peter was so powerful he stopped the whole street with one wave of his hand. They spoke about the beautiful girls in London with  ‘lovely complexions, all roses and cream’, but O’Loughlin remarked with regard to the same, ‘That if at those roses you’d venture to sip, the colour might all come away on you lip! so I’ll wait for the wild rose that’s waitin’ for me where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea’. Again typical of the simple man that was Percy French. He wasn’t taken in by paints and powders! The great American singer-songwriter Don McLean was so impressed with the lyrics, he recorded the song himself. Come along to the Hunt Hall, Castle Street, Mohill on Friday 20 July 2012 at 8:00pm to hear this and many more brilliant Percy French pieces full of fun and wit.

Case Dismissed!!!
‘Are Ye Right There Michael’ otherwise known as ‘The West Clare Railway’ is a song by Percy French, parodying the state of the ‘West Clare Railway’ system in rural County Clare.  Because of a slow train and the decision of the driver to stop for no apparent reason while en route, French, though having left Sligo in the early morning, arrived so late for an 8:00pm recital, which he was due to give that the audience had left. The ballad caused considerable embarrassment for the rail company, who were mocked in music halls throughout Ireland and Britain because of the song. It led to an unsuccessful libel action against French. It is said that French arrived late for the libel hearing at the court, and when questioned by the judge on his lateness, he responded "Your honour, I travelled by the West Clare Railway", resulting in the case being thrown out!! This song with be one of many performed at the official launch of the ‘County Leitrim Percy French Society’ on Friday 20 July at 8:00pm sharp in the Hunt Hall (opposite the Library), Castle Street, Mohill. Come along and enjoy!

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age recently organised a day-trip to Dublin to attend the Bloom Garden Festival in Phoenix Park. In spite of the rain, everyone enjoyed seeing the beautiful show gardens and the various displays and stands both in and around the Grand Pavilion – a real day to remember full of ideas to transform our own gardens in time for the summer. Some of us took the opportunity to catch up with what was going on in the Victorian Walled Garden within Phoenix Park and marvelled at the quality and variety of the vegetables and herbs growing there. Not a weed in site, and no sign of the dreaded slugs and snails (or slug pellets!) that are plaguing our fruit and vegetables back in Carrigallen; how do they do that?

The day ended with a stop at the Lucan Spa Hotel for dinner on the way home, a lovely way to end a really enjoyable day. A visit to the Organic Centre at Rossinver is next on our list - continuing with the gardening theme maybe? And then later on in the year we are planning a short 3-day break to Wexford. As always, our grateful thanks to our hard-working Secretary (Elizabeth Mulligan) for organising everything for us, and making it all go so smoothly.

Dermot Harte RIP
Carrigallen and surrounding areas were deeply shocked when the news broke of Dermot Harte's untimely death following a tragic accident on Sunday 13 May 2012.

Dermot, late of Beaghmore, Carrigallen was a quiet, unassuming and caring person and his voracity for work was evident from a very young age. He helped the late Tom Lockhart with the milking, worked in John O'Malley's butcher shop and when a little older worked for Tommy McGuckian baling and wrapping hay.  His love for machinery was evident in the line of work he performed in the agricultural and building sectors. He was not afraid of hard work and had one project or another on the go, always providing for his much loved wife and family. In recent years Dermot had undertaken fundraising for the Niall Mellon Township Challenge in South Africia and had also travelled to Africia to help with building work there.

He will be sadly missed by his family and the community will be the poorer at his passing. Dermot was predeceased by his mother Maura in 1992.  Sympathy is extened to his wife Deirdre, daughter Michaela, son Gavin, father Alfie and his wife Ann, brothers Ciaran, Padraig, Neil, Rory, Brian, Kevin and Conal; and extended family and friends.

Removal from his residence to St Mary's Church, Carrigallen on Tuesday evening. Funeral Mass was concelebrated and the main celebrant was Very Rev Francis Garvey (Dermot's uncle). Burial was to the adjoining cemetery.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

Back By Popular Demand!

Victor's Dung is set in a farm yard, complete with its very own dung heap, outdoor toilet and rather poor broadband reception. It is the comic tale of Victor Maguire, a crude, vulgar, abrupt, un-PC Cavan farmer who gets a surprise one Friday morning. We are then taken on whirlwind journey through Victor's somewhat sad and unconventional life, meeting up with many a strange bucko along the way… Hold on to your hats… and your sweets (because there may be Cavan people in the audience)… this could get messy…

Common Thread of Heritage link Community
In September 2011 two local community groups in Carrigallen, namely the Margaret of New Orleans Group and the Bredagh Old School Heritage Committee jointly engaged in a major peace building programme called ‘Integrating Communities’. The programme is currently ongoing and is designed to facilitate community organisations to work in partnership on a cross community basis with a view to building relations and fostering increased integration at a local level. It is delivered by the Northern Ireland Rural Development Council (RDC) and funded by International Fund for Ireland.

Over recent months both groups have been receiving a range of support to develop the links between their committees. In addition the two groups have jointly developed a new project which is currently being implemented and funded as part of the programme. The project is in the form of a joint drama production, and is entitled “The Other Place”. It tells the story of Margaret of New Orleans and Percy French who meet in a special place (The Other Place) and talk about their lives and their links and stories from the community of Carrigallen. The play is written and directed by playwright, Maura Williamson. Cast involves children from four national schools in the area, Leitrim Youth Theatre Company Carrigallen, and other members of this community take to the stage.

As part of the process, people from the wider community have been brought together to engage in story telling sessions about their knowledge of Percy and Margaret and the wider area. The play is also enhanced with songs and poems written by Tony Fahy, all of which will be performed live at each event. Come along to what promises to be an excellent, entertaining and family friendly event being staged at the Corn Mill Theatre, Carrigallen on Thursday 24 May, Friday 25 May and Saturday 26 May at 8:30pm. Admission is FREE and bookings can be made on 049 4339612.

Mary Morrow RIP
There was wide spread regret in Carrigallen parish and surrounding areas at the death of Mary Morrow, Errew, Carrigallen which occurred at Cavan General Hospital following a brief illness. She was formerly Mary O'Boyle a native of Bellacorrick, Co Mayo. She immigrated to England while very young. After some years there she met her future husband Thomas Morrow and the couple were later married and made England their home. They reared their family who were all interested in learning the Irish music, which both parents loved. In some years later the Morrow family returned to Thomas' native Carrigallen. All settled very quickly and the young children were very popular and were very much in demand to play at local functions in the parish. They were featured many times on RTÉ. In 1998 Thomas who was an All-Ireland Champion fiddle player joined the traditional music band Dervish.

Mary quickly settled in her adopted home in Carrigallen and made many friends. Her hobbies included bingo and she loved to attend all musical sessions. She endeared herself to all who had the pleasure of knowing this kind lady. She was devout Catholic, always and ever willing to help a neighbour in need. The community will be much the poorer with her passing. Sympathy is extended to her husband Thomas; sons Thomas, John, Andrew and Robert; brother Peter; daughters-in-law; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law and a large family circle. The removal of her remains from the family home to St Mary's Church, Carrigallen was very large. Fr Dennis Murray PP received her remains and once again for her funeral mass which was concelebrated one. The chief celebrant was Fr Denis Murray PP, assisted by Fr John Quinn PP Gortletteragh and Fr Peter McEntire CSSP. Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery. May she Rest in Peace.

Back By Popular Demand!
After a non stop tour around the country, Seamus O'Rourke brings his much loved and acclaimed comedy back to where it all began. The Corn Mill Theatre present the last two shows ever of Victor's Dung written by Seamus O'Rourke on Saturday 2 June and Sunday 3 June 2012.

Victor’s Dung is set in a farm yard, complete with its very own dung heap, outdoor toilet and rather poor broadband reception. It is the comic tale of Victor Maguire, a crude, vulgar, abrupt, un-PC Cavan farmer who gets a surprise one Friday morning. We are then taken on whirlwind journey through Victor’s somewhat sad and unconventional life, meeting up with many a strange bucko along the way… Hold on to your hats… and your sweets (because there may be Cavan people in the audience)… this could get messy…

Doors open at 8:00pm and performance starts at 8:30pm. Booking at 049 4339612 or bookings@cornmilltheatre.com

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age welcomed Lorraine Mulvey, the Digital Outreach Champion working with Leitrim Development Company to a recent meeting.  She was able to tell us all about the digital TV switchover taking place on 24 October this year. From this date there will be no more analogue signals available across Ireland, and without the right equipment, or receiver, we will not be able to watch those TV favourites. SAORVIEW is RTE’s new digital TV service which will replace the old TV network, and is available now.

Lorraine explained that it may be possible to continue to use existing TVs by purchasing a set top box (if your TV does not have a SAOR logo), or if you subscribe to a Pay TV service. Information leaflets are readily available and explain in full exactly what is happening and what you need to do, as well as a helpline on 1890 940 980.  Alternatively have a look at www.goingdigital.gov.ie and www.saorview.ie. This last site gives details of approved SAOR dealers and installers in our area – there are three registered for County Leitrim. Lorraine emphasised that there are no approved door-to-door salespeople. So do not be tempted to purchase a set-top box, or new TV from anyone calling at your door.  If anyone does call offering to sell you such equipment then please inform the Gardai as soon as possible. Before Lorraine’s presentation, a brief meeting was held to finalise details for our visit to the Bloom Festival in Dublin, and suggestions as to where to spend our Autumn Break this year!

Changes to Teacher Allocations Causing Concern
Parents and teachers at St Mary’s National School, Carrigallen are anxiously awaiting the result of an appeal to the Department of Education regarding teacher allocations for the next school year commencing September 2012. Under the new proposed allocation rules announced by the Minister Mr Ruairí Quinn, St Mary’s National School will lose a teacher from September.  In this case a language teacher, which is of particular importance given the large number of pupils requiring language tuition. An appeal has been formally lodged with the Department some time ago with the Parent’s Association support. The appeal along with seeking the support of all the Oireachtas representatives in the constituency, lobby on behalf of our school on what is a very important issue which is going to impact on the school if there isn’t a rethink on behalf of the Department. The result of the appeal is due to be announced in late April and it is an anxious time for all concerned waiting to be told what the final decision will be. Let us hope that it will favour St Mary’s.

Death of Maud Rosemond
There was wide spread regret in the community and surrounding areas at the news of the death of Maud (Maudie as she was affectionatelly known,) which occurred at her residence on 23 March 2012. Maudie despite being in her 94th year enjoyed reasonable good health and was able to manage at her own home right up to the end, with the help of her family and friends as well as a very dedicated number of Home Care workers.

Maudie, the last of the Rosemond family lived all her life in Calloughs, where she worked with her parents who ran a shop, along with her late brothers George and Billy.  Later Maudie cared for her parents.  Her father George, like her self lived to a very advanced age and it was from him whom she received a very vivid history of the area, including his own memories of his time as 'jarvey' to the famous Percy French, when he lived and worked in the area.  Indeed the Rosemonds gave generously of their time to those researching French's life and times including a TV Programme presented by the late Brendan O'Dowda in late 1960's.  More recently Maudie gave an interview to Eugene Murphy of ShannonSide/Northern Sound Radio in 2007, for their 'Out and About' programme. A staunch Church goer, when her health allowed.

Maudie participated at every level of Church activities including being the first woman member of the Vestry at her local Church of Ireland which was formally an all male domain. Maudie had a keen ear for music and enjoyed nothing better than listening to radio programmes playing the songs of yester year. Maudie's funeral on Sunday saw a large attendance with  Rev Hazel Hicks delivering a very appropriate sermon on the passing of one of our best loved citizen. Sympathy is extended to her nieces, nephews, sister-in-law, relatives and a large circle of friends. May she Rest in Peace. Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs Kathleen Boyle RIP
The death occurred of the Kathleen Boyle, Drumcannon, Carrigallen at Cavan General Hospital following a brief illness. A mamber of the Magarahan family from Killeshandra, Co Cavan, Kathleen came to work in Jack O'Keeffe's bar and grocery business, Main Street, Carrigallen in the early 1940's and became very popular with all local people and was held in high esteem. It was here in Carrigallen that she met her future husband, Patrick Boyle and after their marriage they made Drumcannon their home.  She assisted her husband to run the family farm and became very popular with all local people and at a time when illness might occur to a neighbour she could be relied upon to assist in any way she could.  Indeed the area is much the poorer for her passing. Sympathy is extended to her brother Francie, Killeshandra; nieces, nepheews, and a large family circle.  The removal of her remains and funeral following a con-celebrated Mass in St Mary's Church, Drumeela in which the chief celebrant was Fr Denis Murray PP Carrigallen assisted by Fr Dan Sheridan PP Killeshandra. Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age Group
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age Group held their AGM recently – to almost a ‘full house’ of members! The Chairperson, Eileen Ward, reminded us of some of the events that had happened in the past year that really underlines just how ‘active’ we are!

Ten Pin Bowling remains high on the list of favourite activities - we went to the Bowling Alley in Longford three times last year, and also managed to fit in a 6-week Yoga course, as well as beginning our series of informal weekly exercise sessions.
Not quite so physically energetic have been the Whist lessons, although they certainly stretch us mentally – and trips to the Dog Racing at Mullingar; watching our four-legged friends take to the track while we partook of some refreshments seemed like a very good idea…

A presentation from Colm O’Reilly surprised us at the benefits some of the products he stocks in the Nature Trail (Mohill and Ballinamore) can bring.  More recently a presentation on the advantages of Aloe Vera was a real eye-opener.  The gel from this cactus-like plant can help a variety of conditions – maybe we should all keep some in the medicine cabinet? The information another speaker gave us about panic alarms, emergency lighting etc made us think about how these items can help, as well as giving us just that extra bit of reassurance that help is always at hand.

A very successful Social Evening was held at the Kilbracken Arms Hotel with proceeds donated to charity, including the Irish Heart Foundation.  Several of our members attended social events held by other Active Age groups in our area. The Kilbracken Arms was also the venue for our Christmas Party, postponed due to the dreadful icy conditions at the start of December 2011, but enjoyed by all of us when we re-scheduled later in the month.  Hopefully Mitchells will be able to play host to us this year?

A day trip to Dublin, visiting three very different venues - the Guinness Storehouse, Farmleigh and Kilmainham Gaol – was enjoyable, and thought provoking, while our short break based in Letterkenny gave us some lovely memories of places visited to bring home to Carrigallen.

Following the Chairman’s report, Anne Harte presented the Treasurers Report, which showed us to have a healthy bank balance, but we need to continue to raise funds where we can. Election of Officers (unanimous): Chairperson – Eileen Ward (Assistant Chairman – Etta McGerty); Treasurer – Anne Harte; Secretary – Elizabeth Mulligan (Assistant Secretary – Valerie Elsegood); PRO – Valerie Elsegood. Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age are to host a Forum in April, with representatives from all the Active Age groups in our area attending.

The Late Jim Plunkett
The death occurred of Jim Plunkett, Cloncorrick, Carrigallen at Tallaght Intensive Care Unit, Dublin on Friday 24 February 2012. Jim and his wife Lily have been living in Carrigallen for a number of years now. He was a gentleman and was very proud of his family. He was on the first Championship winning team in Aughawillen, the 1960 Junior team with whom he celebrated a 50th reunion some time ago.

When he moved to Bagnelstown, Co Carlow his love of football continued. He was secretary of the local Club for seventeen years. Although he was away from Leitrim, he stayed loyal to his native Club celebrating their wins and following the success of their players on the County Leitrim panel down through the years.  He will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him. Sympathy is extended to his wife Lily; daughters Mary, Navan, Co Meath, and Carmel, Roscommon; brothers Oliver and Pappy; sister Lily; son-in-law Seamus; brother-in-law; nieces and nephews; relatives and friends.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age recently had an interesting and informative presentation about the benefits of Aloe Vera. Not only can the gel from this cactus-like plant help restore the balance in the digestive system, it can also benefit some skin problems as well as helping, in certain cases, to relieve aches and pains.

As with all natural remedies the presenter was careful to point out that the extracts of this remarkable plant would not work its magic on everyone – and if you are on medication to check with your GP before taking it in liquid or tablet form, or rubbing the gel into your skin.

A short meeting followed the presentation – more suggestions for outings were briefly discussed, particularly visits to the Cathedrals of St Paul’s and Christchurch in Dublin. The AGM will be on Monday 12 March 2012 at the Health Centre, Carrigallen.

Sympathy
There was widespread sadness in Carrigallen and surrounding areas on the recent death of Mary Brigid Murray (nee McIntyre), late of Gortermone, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim.  Mary was a highly respected member of the community and a very good friend and neighbour.  She met and married her late husband Noel in England.  They moved back to Longford and then to Gortermone where she reared her much loved family.  Mary enjoyed her many hobbies, she was an avid bingo goer and on numerous occasions in the past four generations of her family being present.  There was a minute silence in her honour held at Carrigallen bingo.  She loved dancing and meeting people.  She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

SVP Thank You
St Manachan's (Mohill) SVP Conference would like to thank everybody who kindly donated to our Christmas appeal whether by way of a monetary contribution or with our food appeal in Baxter's Centra and Eurospar. The response as always far exceeded our expectations once again confirming that the generosity of our local community is even in these unbelievably trying and difficult times unwavering. With your help this year we helped families with small children (Santy) with the huge amount of toys donated. We divided the food donated into over 25 Hampers all containing needy and everyday items. In the boxes were tins of biscuits and sweets, these went to families with children who I am positive under their circumstances would not have seen any such treats. From Mohill SVP Conference I wish all a Peaceful Healthy and Safe 2012.

Carigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carigallen and Drumeela Active Age held their annual Christmas Dinner at the Kilbracken Arms on December 19th – a day later than scheduled due to the extremely icy roads in the area on December 18th. In spite of having to re-organise everything at such short notice the staff at Kilbracken gave us a wonderful meal, much appreciated by all of us who were able to attend – our grateful thanks go to them. We are looking forward to 2012 and another year of outings, talks and of course our regular meetings, which will begin again in a few weeks’ time; the date and time, will be notified in the usual way. We hope to continue with some gentle exercises at the beginning of each meeting – this started very recently and we all appreciated Ann Harte, our Treasurer, (having completed the necessary course!), facilitating this for us. We certainly all felt the benefit! As always, Elizabeth Mulligan, our Secretary, will be looking for suggestions as to what the Group would like to do throughout the coming year.  Ideas for outings, talks, destinations for short breaks, classes etc can be discussed at our next meeting – please make sure you come along with some proposals!

Community Text Alert Scheme
Our Community Text Alert Scheme is now up and running with almost 300 people signed up. This is a great response in a short time and we hope that those who have not yet signed up will do so in the very near future. The more people who are part of the TEXT scheme give a greater chance for the Community to be aware of any suspicious activity in the area.  As winter closes in we all know that these opportunist criminals will be more active as they seek to fund their illegal activities. To sign up to the TEXT scheme just fill in the Envelope with your name, address and mobile number along with the Annual Subscription of €5.  The Envelopes are available from shops in Carrigallen and Newtowngore. Together we can make our Community a safer and more secure place for all of us...... Don't leave it to others, do it today.

Mrs Mary Donohoe RIP

There was widespread regret in the Carrigallen parish and surrounding ones at the news of the death of Mrs Mary Donohoe, late of Main Street, Carrigallen and Manchester, England.  She was a native of Corlough, Co Cavan and Mary came to Carrigallen many years ago to join the staff of the late Pat Masterson, Corner House. She was later to meet her future husband Eamon Donohoe, a very popular and well known publican.  The couple married and carried on a thriving business for many years.  They immigrated to England where set up a new home.  They made many visits to Carrigallen over the years. Sympathy is extended to her husband Eamonn, daughter Marie, grandchildren and sister.  Her funeral took place in Manchester on 15 December 2011.  May she Rest in Peace.
