John Bosco (Killian McGuinness) is a fifty three year old bachelor living in rural Leitrim. He has been consigned to a life of celibacy by a combination of religiously inspired sexual guilt, social ineptitude and plain bad luck. His fate is not, as he explains himself, the result of a lack of effort on his part. A combination of flashbacks, imaginings, and actual happenings illustrate his endeavours with the opposite sex. His run of failure continues throughout the play in spite of the ministrations of a matchmaker (Brian O'Reilly), his aunt Jane (Maura McGuinness), a smooth-talking lothario (Stephen Grey), and even the local priest (Sean McIntyre), all of whom are filled with parochial advice on the subject.

TV Appearance
10 Year old Oisin Mulhall Wallace became a local hero in Carrigallen recently after he featured on an RTE documentary Children in Charge Irelands Young Carers on Tuesday 23rd November 2010. Oisin was one of four young carers who featured in the documentary from across the country. Little is known about Ireland's young carers, they are invisable in the eyes of the state, yet every day throughout Ireland young people quietly care for sick or disabled relatives bound by bonds of love and loyalty. Children in Charge Ireland's Young Carers revealed for the first time the reality of what life is like when a child takes on the role of caring for a parent. The documentary gave voice to Oisin and the three other carers who have taken on responsibility for their parent's care, years before they should have to. Oisin was the perfect interviewee. Young Oisin was hailed a hero by all his friends at school in Carrigallen the day after the documentary and a hero he most certainly is. So say all of us. You can view the documentary in the factual section of the RTE player online.

One Act Drama Festival
The 7th Annual One Act Drama Festival 2010 was held in the Corn Mill Theatre last weekend. It proved to be a very successful weekend of drama with nine plays being performed to a very high standard which was enjoyed by the large audiences on the three days. The adjudicator, Christopher Fitzsimon A.D.A. thanked the Festival committee and complimented them on their fine theatre and facilities. Also, he was highly impressed by the five new plays that were performed, which commented of the Ireland of today, not just the financial crisis but also the lack of morals being portrayed.

In his comments on Friday night about the writing of Victors Dung, he compared Seamus O'Rourke to that of the late, great Patrick Kavanagh and to Monaghan's novelist, Patrick McCabe. If there is no writing, then there is no play! He would like to see an award for an original piece of script being implemented into the Festivals, as there are numerous new plays being written now a days.

The results from the Festival are:
Best Group (Open Section) - Corn Mill Theatre Group with Victors Dung written by Seamus O'Rourke
Second - Balally Players with Like a Virgin written by Gordon Steel
Third - St Patrick's Dramatic Society with Laughter in the Shadow of the Trees written by James Prideaux

Best Group (Confined Section) – Cloonacool Players with Last Tango in Cloonacool written by David Tristram
Second - Breffni Players with Melody written by Deirdre Kinahan
Third – Phoenix Players with The Sentinel written by Pauric Neary.

Seamus O'Rourke, Corn Mill Theatre Group won Best Actor while Carmel McKay, St Patrick's Dramatic Society won Best Actress in the Open Section. In the Confined Section the awards went to Catherine Ryan, Millrace Drama Group and Noel O'Callahan, Breffni Players. The Aidan Harte Memorial Award for Most Entertaining Play was won by the Corn Mill Theatre Group.

Congratulations to the Corn Mill Theatre Group for their success in the Festival and also for winning in Tubbercurry Festival. Well done to Charles McGuinness and Tommy Sharkey for winning the Adjudicator's Award in Tubbercurry. The five results endorse the versatile, creative and acting talents of Seamus, Charles and Tommy. We wish them well in the All Ireland which will be held in The Mill Theatre, Dundrum, Dublin from Friday 3 December to Sunday 5 December.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Clare Finnegan, daughter of Martina and Michael Finnegan, Drummerkane, Carrigallen who has won a scholarship to National University of Ireland Maynooth, in addition to a JP McManus All Ireland Scholarship Third Level Education Award. A past student of Carrigallen Vocational School, Clare received her awards in Maynooth and in the University of Limerick Concert Hall from Mr McManus. The award goes to a certain number of students in recognition of the results and the fact that they received more than 500 points in their Leaving Certificate.

Leitrim Youth Theatre Company (LYTC) Carrigallen
Maura Williamson facilitator of LYTC Carrigallen would like to thank the members of LYTC Carrigallen for making their recent production of Pranked by Ciaran Gray such a great success, also to Helen Corcoran, assistant facilitator; Becky Thomas, Backstage Manager and to Barry Taylor Production Manager for their support, encouragement and endless cups of tea. A special word of thanks goes to Geraldine and Hubert Whelan for giving up their time to help back stage. All the hard work put into all the rehearsals really paid off in the end as the play was performed in front of four packed houses. It was an amazing and exhilarating experience was the general consensus from the members of the cast.

Maura feels that drama not only builds confidences and self esteems, encourages team work, builds the ground work for life long friendships and gives the members the opportunity to explore their many varied talents. Acting on stage is not for everyone and some members prefer to work backstage or in the lighting and sound departments. Working with a cast and backstage crew of 24 was something of a challenge and also so was introducing a live band during one of the scenes. This was a new avenue for my directing skills and one which I will be very comfortable with using again in the future. Thanks to the funding bodies which makes projects like this happen, Arts Initiative under Leitrim County Council and Arts Council of Ireland. We wish members of LYTC Carrigallen, Paula Kiernan, No Reception who are taking part in Our Schools Got Talent all the best in the next round of the competition.

Beezneez Bring Tuesdays with Morrie to the Corn Mill

Beezneez Theatre Company are always welcome visitors to The Corn Mill and their latest visit will surely be one to treasure as they present the beautiful and moving Tuesdays with Morrie on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th October 2010. This production wowed audiences on its spring tour and comes to Corn Mill with standing ovations ringing in its ears. Tuesdays with Morrie is the dramatised version on the multi million selling book and tells the story of how a terminally ill professor meets up with a former student after sixteen years and begin a series of meetings where the meaning of life and death is explored. While the theme of the play may seem downbeat, the script is infused with much gentle humour and the humanity of the piece is something that audiences take away and reflect upon for a long time afterwards. John McDwyer directs Michael Roper and Pat Feeley in two towering performances that will live long in the memory. With a sensitive lighting design by Sean Mulroy and a soundtrack designed by Alan Dunne, Tuesdays with Morrie has all the top class trademarks of a Beezneez production and provides an evening of pure magic that will not be easily forgotten. A production which will be extremely popular requires early booking and the Corn Mill Theatre number is 049 4339612.

Seamus Dolan RIP
Readers in the area were saddened to hear of the passing of Seamus Dolan, former Fianna Fáil TD and Senator which occurred in early August. The late Seamus was born in Dowra, Co Cavan in 1914 into what was the last Gaelic speaking family in west Cavan. Having qualified as a teacher he came to Kilygorman National School where he held the position for many years. Having served as a TD for a period in the 1960's Seamus became a member of Senad Éireann, later to become Chairperson or Cathaoirleach, an office he held with distinction until his retirement in the early 1980's representing near neighbours in Cavan. The late Seamus was a frequent visitor to Carrigallen and Drumeela attending funerals and party functions. His funeral Mass was in Miltown and was attended by a huge congregation which included many of his former Oireachtas colleagues along with a representative of the Taoiseach Brian Cowan. Recent Death of Eilish Greene - Sr Dolorosa
There was widespread sadness at the news of the death of Eilish Greene (Sr Dolorosa), Drumcannon, Carrigallen, in Blackpool, England recently. She had been in poor health for some time, despite this she remained in good spirits, always enquiring about friends around the Carrigallen area. Eilish was one of fourteen children born to Mary and Packie Greene, Milbrooke House, Drumcannon, Carrigallen. She was twin to Clara RIP, who later married Pat Masterson (Snr). She is survived by her sister Bernadette, New York, brother Vincent, Drumcannon, nieces, nephew, the community extend their sympathy to her family. Eilish attended Bredagh National School under Master Paddy Maguire, and was a keen sports person playing camóige with Carrigallen team in the early 1950's.

She continued her secondary education in the Convent of Mercy, Ballymahon, Co Longford completing her final examinations with distinguished results. On the death of her father she answered her calling to the religious life by joining The Cross and Passion order in Bolton, Lancashire, England in 1949 and took her final vows in 1952. Her vocation within the Order was to teach; she taught in Yorkshire, Leeds and Durham for many years and was made Superior there. In 1970 she was requested by the Leeds Diocesan Catholic Child Care to open a much needed hostel for troubled and abandoned street girls. She and her fellow sister, Sister Frances opened a hostel with two bedrooms and a cooker in Dewsbury, Yorkshire and were overwhelmed by the response of the Dewsbury community who brought furniture, food and money. The hostel rapidly expanded with the aid of community support coupled by Sr Dolorosa's tireless work, gaining a national reputation in England as a benchmark as to how to support, rehabilitate and re-house these troubled girls.

It was noted on many occasions that it was Sr Dolorosa's compassion and friendship for each girl that was most notable in this success story. Many of the girls had never experienced a mother's love before; a large number returned to the hostel on Mother's Day with gifts for the Sisters and in later years bring their own children with them. Sr Dolorosa often said that in her line of work she continually encountered the three P's - great emotional pain, great pleasure and great privilege. “It was a great privilege to work with these girls; they are all God's children.”

In 1981 Sr Dolorosa was awarded Citizen of the Year for her charitable works to the poor and needy in Yorkshire and was later invited to Buckingham Palace to meet Queen Elizabeth II, an occasion which she commented on by saying “I was enthralled watching all the beautiful fashion, the top hats and tails. I was only there in my working clothes”. After twenty years working and managing the Westhaven Hostel, Dewsbury, Sr Dolorosa was ready for new challenges, she worked in a number of parishes doing pastoral care in Glasgow, Scotland and County Antrim. In 2002 she celebrated her Golden Jubilee in Carrigallen with her family and friends after which she retired from active ministry. She left this world in the care of her fellow Sisters in Lytham, Blackpool on 18th August 2010 and her funeral was on Tuesday, 24th August in Lytham. Fr Denis Murray PP, Carrigallen commented on the news of her death “that Leitrim had lost one of its unsung ambassadors; her life's work was dedicated to helping others”. May She Rest in Peace.

Cultural and Heritage Day

It commenced with an art exhibition by Colleen Quinn and this was followed by three plays performed on stage in the Corn Mill Theatre to a packed auditorium. Two of the plays were by local playwrights Maura Williamson and Seamus O’Rourke. Seamus’ latest play ‘Victor’s Dung’ was performed for the first time and cast was Seamus O’Rourke, Charles McGuinness and Tommy Sharkey. This will be on stage again in November and it is one not to be missed! The pen is a powerful tool when in Seamus’ hands! The night ended with the launch of the album Songs of Love and Hope by local musicians Mary Harte and Tony Fahy. The success of the night bears testament to all the artistic talent in the area.

Dervish Returns to the Corn Mill Theatre
The Corn Mill Theatre welcomes back Dervish live in concert with local band member Tom Morrow for a night of traditional music and song on Wednesday, 29th September at 8:30pm. This performance is supported by Leitrim County Council Arts Office and The Last Wednesday. Ever since Dervish hit the scene they have paved new roads, expanding the limits of what Irish/Celtic music can encompass. Their rhythm section, made up of three players playing anything from Mandolins to Guitars in any given combination, is easily one of the strongest rhythm sections ever assembled. This serves as the harmonious canvas upon which the fiddle, wind, and accordion soar to roaring heights.

These six players alone have the sheer talent to conquer. But with the delicate and completely honest voice of Cathy Jordan added to the mix, what we witness is a group of musicians whose power is unstoppable. Their latest album is intense, humane, and honest. Even the fast jigs have an air of love and honesty about them. What distinguishes this album from other outings is the fact that it manages to mix extremely raw energy with incredibly structured compositions. The compositions here match and at times even outdo anything the chieftains could manage. This is the new apex of Irish music, period. Booking on 049 4339612.

This production wowed audiences on its Spring tour and comes to Corn Mill with standing ovations ringing in it’s ears.

A production which will be extremely popular requires early booking and the Corn Mill number is 049 4339612.

Michael Smyth
There was widespread regret over the counties of Longford, Cavan and Leitrim at the recent death of Michael Smyth, Fyhora, Moyne which occurred on Thursday, 5th August 2010 at Our Lady's Manor Nursing Home, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford. He was a man of great intellectual ability and intelligence. Michael was well known in the area as he served as creamery manager of Gortermone Creamery, Moyne, Co Longford for over forty years. Under his direction the creamery increased its intake of milk rapidly and turnover at the agriculture store increased so much that at the end of the 70s it was necessary to erect a new enlarged store. His achievements were founded on values of decency and resposibility. He was a very dedicated worker and he never missed a day from his work. He retired in 1986. He was very popular with all his customers who had a great respect for him. He was a member of a great footballing family, late of Drumury, Moyne, his late brother John won County Championship honours for Dromard, Co Longford.

His remains were received at St Mary's Church, Moyne on Friday and Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, August 7th. Chief celebrant was his brother-in-law Rev Fr Bernard Doyle who was assisted by Rev Fr Patsy McDermot, Chaplain, Moyne Community School and Fr Phair. Afterwards he was laid to rest in St Mary's Cemetery, Carrigallen. The large crowds who thronged the church and its precincts and accompanied the remains to its final resting place gave some indication of the esteem in which he was held over a wide area of the countryside.

Michael was predeceased by his son Stephen just two years previous on the day. Deepest sympathy is extended to his sorrowing family wife Margaret, son Bernard, Mullingar; daughters Mary, Cavan; Roisin, Dundalk; Carmel, Newtowncashel; Martina, Kildare; brothers – in - law, Fr Bernard, Pat and Sean; sisters – in - law; Rose, Bridie and Mary; nephews, nieces, grandchildren, relatives and friends. May his soul rest in peace.

Mrs Mary Carty
There was widespread regret in the Aughavas and Carrigallen parishes at the news of the death of Mrs Mary Carty nee Quinn, Corduff, Aughavas at the residence of her daughter Philomena McWeeney, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim. She was 96 years. She came to Aughavas from Mountida following her marriage to her husband, Pee Carty. She reared her family and assisted in the running of their farm. She was always on hand to help a neighbour in need. Mary and her late husband made many trips to USA in later years to visit with their family. Their son Joe is a prominent business man, as he is a very active partner in the Rambling House which is a Pub and Restaurant on Katona Avenue, Woodlawn, New York. He is also a prominent partner in the world famous Rory Dolans, McLean Avenue, Yonkers, New York.

The members of her family were known far and wide for their musical talent as a traditional Irish group, The Carty Folk Four in 1960s to 1970s eras. Mary was also mother-in-law of M.C. Hardcastle from the more recent band Harry-O. Sympathy is extended to her sons Joe, Sean (USA) daughters Kathleen, Delia (USA), Mary Rose, Moyne, Co Longford, Philomena, Carrick-on-Shannon, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. Her funeral mass took place in St Joseph’s Church, Aughavas and burial was to the adjoining cemetery. May she Rest in Peace.

Bright Eyes Back To School Campaign
This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to avail of this service as waiting lists for Visual Screening in schools can take months or years. A Special Eye screening programme will run for all children/teenagers for the month of September at our clinic in Ballinamore. The campaign is designed to offer a 6 point screening process to children of school-going age to detect early signs of vision problems in children. It is a more thorough and detailed screening than the screening available in the national schools. It also reduces the waiting time currently experienced by parents for children’s eye screening through the HSE and schools. It is hoped that all parents will become aware of the importance of early visual screening of children. Early detection can prevent many problems later on in life. Researchers agree that many learning difficulties experienced by children have links to visual deficiencies. This programme is strictly by appointment only and a full visual report will be given to all parents.

It also reduces the waiting time currently experienced by parents for childrens eye screening through the HSE and schools.

It is hoped that all parents will become aware of the importance of early visual screening of children. Early detection can prevent many problems later on in life. Researchers agree that many learning difficulities expereienced by children have links to visual deficiencies. This programme is strictly by appointment only and a full visual report will be given to all parents.
If you require further information, or if you wish to make an appointment please contact 071-9169090 / 087-6188763.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age group have had talks from the professionals covering some health-related topics during recent meetings. In June Donna, from the Irish Heart Foundation, told us about the detrimental effect a poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking (and alcohol in excess) has on our general well-being, and for some people can lead to all sorts of health problems including type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol levels and heart disease. Cholesterol is a type of fat found in blood - too much of it and it will stick to arteries (think of a porridge-type consistency) preventing the flow of blood to vital organs in our bodies.Donna included the risk of strokes as one of the possible side effects of not taking care about what we eat, smoking, lack of exercise etc. On average anyone having a stroke has a ‘window’ of 3 hours to get the medication and care that can prevent further damage to the brain and reduce the likelihood of death and disability.

The Irish Heart Foundation and Stroke Action are promoting the FAST campaign - if, at any time, you are with someone who you think may have had a stroke, remember FAST:

FACE has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?
ARMS can they raise both arms and keep them there?
SPEECH is their speech slurred?
TIME to call 999 if you see any single one of these signs.

More information on www.stroke.ie or www.irishheart.ie or from the local HSE Office.

Our July Meeting made us think about our feet when Geraldine, a Podiatrist, brought along a TOG scanner. This gadget looked like a large rectangular board, connected to a computer. Several of our members volunteered to take part in standing on the scanner, then walking across it - our feet have a direct impact on the rest of our bodies, and when a problem develops with our feet then the way we walk, stand etc can put stress on joints and lead to more serious problems. Geraldine was able to tell from the resulting images what, if any, problems our volunteers had, or may have in the future, and more importantly what action to take to sort everything out.

Looking after our feet is important - 25% of the bones in our bodies are in our feet, and on average we will walk over 100,000 miles in a lifetime, so we need to take care of them! The date for our next meeting will be well publicised, so keep looking in the usual places over the coming weeks. Suggestions for speakers and outings are always welcome - any thoughts then please let Elizabeth Mulligan, our Secretary, know about them.

Irish Blood Transfusion Service
One in four people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. Everyday, patients in hospitals throughout Ireland require blood transfusions. Sometimes it may be for a routine surgical procedure such as a hip operation. Other times it may be for someone recovering from a road traffic accident, major surgery such as a heart bypass or perhaps a transfusion is needed to enable a patient to tolerate the effects of cancer treatment. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) provides the blood and blood products needed in hospitals to help these patients. Every week 3,000 donations are needed in Ireland. A coronary artery bypass may use between 1 and 5 units of blood. A car victim may require up to 30 units of blood, a bleeding ulcer could require anything between 3 and 30 units of blood. An average adult has between 10 and 12 pints of blood. A blood donation is just 470mls - less than one pint.

By giving blood, this allows the IBTS to meet the needs of patients nationwide and to insure lives are saved everyday in Ireland. The IBTS needs to collect 3,000 blood donations weekly so why not help them by giving a life saving gift. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service Clinic will be held in St Brigid's Community Centre, Loch Gowna, Co Cavan on Wednesday 21st July 2010 and Thursday 22nd July 2010 from 5:00pm to 8:30pm. Help ensure essential blood supplies are always available by giving blood regularly.

Leitrim Youth Theatre Company Visit National Festival of Youth Theatre in Wexford
Eight members of LYTC Carrigallen and Carrick-on-Shannon travelled by train to Carne Co. Wexford to The National Festival of Youth Theatre organised by the National Association of Youth Drama (NAYD) from Wednesday 30th June to Sunday 4th July 2010. This trip was also funded under Arts Initiative by Leitrim County Council. The participants were Cathal Whelan, Gerard McDermott, Claire Quinn, Grainne O’Malley, Carrigallen and Gavin Sweeney, Saoirse Bazzani Bancroft, John McWeeney, and Killian O’Boyle, Carrick-on-Shannon and they were accompanied by Maura Williamson and Helen Corcoran LYTC Carrigallen.

The group were accommodated in scenic Carne overlooking the beach with no TV and poor phone reception, where their creativity flourished in professional drama workshops facilitated by Max Hafler working on imagination and dreams. Sue Mythen worked on physical theatre and exercises in devising and mask-work. Liam Halligan focused on vocal expressiveness, and ways of using text of a story to create a dynamic and imaginative performance. Miquel Barcelo looked at the art of becoming a professional fool through high energy games, physical storytelling, masks and improvising. Sharon Cromwell connected with the creativity within by starting with a blank canvas, then using improvisation, devising and group writing, ending with the expression of unique ideas.

This event was very professionally organised and run by the team at NAYD and feedback from the Leitrim participants included an experience of a life time, memorable, learned new skills to take back to the group, so happy I decided to go, met new friends and realised how important youth drama is in Ireland. Thanks to Arts Officer, Caoimhin Corrigan and Community Youth Development Officer, Kate McCarty for their support and belief in Youth drama in Leitrim.

Bill Hawthorn
Bill Hawthorn late of Aughavilla, Carrigallen sadly passed away on Wednesday, 9th June 2010 at his residence. Bill is survived by his partner Julie, father Willaim, sister Sandra, brother-in-law William and nieces Heather, Helen, Sylvia and Allison. A service was held in Corrawallen Church on Saturday 12th June, followed by burial in Killegar cemetery. Bill had moved to Aughavilla forty-three years ago with his family from Longford and was a well known colourful character in the area. He was a well read man and would always keep you in lively chat and rest assured you would leave with him knowing a great deal about you. Bill had worked his farm for many years and had worked in the meat factory in Rooskey, also, turning his hand to painting and decorating. A true testament to a person is the unconditional friendship of an animal. His beloved collie dog Angie was found loyally at his feet and remains at his door till this day. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and neighbours. May he Rest in Peace.

Thanks

Eurochild 2010
Twenty-one children from St Mary's National School, Carrigallen have been selected by the Eurochild 2010 Judging Panel for publication in this year’s competition of Artwork and Poetry. Congratulations goes to John Brennan, Rebecca Collins, Marc Dolan, Grace Donohoe, Emma Finnegan, Tara Finnegan, Sarah Hackett, Louise Hession, Colm Kiernan, Jack Ledwith, Oisín Mulhall Wallace, Kirsty Mulligan, Maeve Nixon, Ronan O'Neill, Brónagh O'Rourke, Alesia Petrova, Orla Reilly, Leah Skinner, Tianna Skinner, Orla Tierney and Cormac Whelan.

The 2010 Anthology was presented to the Lord Mayor of Cork in the Cork City Council Chambers on Friday last, 18th June. The children accompanied by their parents, sisters and brothers; and their teachers made the long journey to Cork to be present at the Eurochild summer morning of music, meetings and poetry readings. The book will be touring the country throughout autumn, before its official launch in November. The Eurochild project began in 1995 with a series of poetry workshops that took place in schools and youth groups in Cork citand county as part of Tigh Fili Art Centre youth outreach programme. Following the success of the workshops the children's work was published. The following year Eurochild was invited to France to take part in the Euroecole Children's Festival in Nantes. This initiated an exiting relationship which has resulted in the project having contact with over 378,000 Irish and European children over the past 10 years.

Now Eurochild includes the annual publication of the Eurochild Anthology of Poetry and Art, the Eurochild International Festival in June, and a poetry outreach programme which takes place in Ireland throughout the year. Its aims are to encourage children to become aware of the diversity and cultural wealth in Europe. It also links schools around Europe and learn about their culture, customs and language. It encourages children's creativity through art and poetry.

All-Ireland Shield Final U 14 Ladies
On Sunday, 13th June 2010 Leitrim took on Longford in the U14 Ladies All-Ireland Final in Mullahoran. It was a great achievement to be in the final. A great crowd was in attendance and the President of The Ladies GAA was present. The game started and the two sides were equal. At half time Leitrim was ahead by a point. Leitrim started strong in the second half and took over for the first 15 minutes and got a lead up of 4 points but Longford came back and attacked very strong in the last 15 minutes and missed a penalty also. The Leitrim backs defended well and in the end Leitrim emerged with a 5 point victory. When the Captain Alva Clancy was presented with the Cup there was a lot of excitement and cheering. Congratulations to all the team and panel and the Managers of Pat McWeeney, Bernie McLoughlin and Ciaran Moran who has worked extremely well with this team from last January. It was great to see six girls from St Joseph’s on this Team, and they represented their Club very well at this level. Congrats to Sealin O’Rourke, Carmel McGovern, Niamh McGuire, Shannen O’Rourke, Lorraine Maguire, and Bronagh O’Rourke. Keep the good work up girls!!

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age Group

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age Group have been out and about again! On Tuesday, 15th June 2010, 26 members went for a day trip to Dublin - first to Croke Park and then, in the afternoon, to the City West Hotel for a guided tour of the Titanic Artefacts Exhibition. Croke Park impressed everyone, not just the sheer size of it all – it is the fourth largest stadium in the world, can take 82,300 spectators, has over 2,000 doors, and the pitch is much larger than those we are seeing on our TVs for the Football World Cup in South Africa - but also for the professional organisation that goes on behind the scenes to prepare for all the games that take place there, not just the All-Ireland Final. The short film we were shown detailing how it all comes together on ‘match day’ held us spell bound - including the non-sports fans! The dressing rooms, corporate hospitality suites, VIP seating (hope Mary McAleese doesn’t find out how many of us tried her seat for size!), conference rooms, GAA museum, as well as the pitch, were all part of our ‘tour’ - and this being an Active Age outing included coffee and scones in the café…The Titanic Artefacts Exhibition didn’t disappoint us either. The Exhibition has been on a worldwide tour and been visited by over 22 million people. Several of our members had heard stories from family and friends of the experiences of some of the passengers, so our visit was very poignant for them.

The Exhibition was extremely detailed, with ‘mock-ups’ of first and third class cabins, the bridge and other areas of the ship, together with an iceberg made from real ice (how did they do that?). This magnificent ship sank in 1912, and some of the 5000 plus artefacts (not all on display) retrieved from the sea bed two and a half miles under the North Atlantic - including the ship’s bell, money, china and more personal items belonging to some of the passengers - were brought to life for us by the Guide who had a story to tell relating to nearly all the exhibits, and for some of the passengers as well. His descriptions of how different it was on board for first and third class passengers made us aware of how desperate some of those third class passengers – including the children – must have been to get to what they hoped would be a better life. The day ended with a welcome meal (of course!), and the chance to chat about our recollections of two very different venues. Elizabeth Mulligan, our Secretary, organised our ‘Dublin Day Out’ and we owe her a vote of thanks for such an enjoyable, and informative, day. Planning is progressing well for our Autumn Break, notice of meetings during the summer will be publicised – and thank you Cassie for sharing your birthday cake with us at our May meeting!

Public Libraries Free Information Service
Libraries are at the fore front of providing information. Sometimes not everyone in the community is aware of all the services available: for example Leitrim County Library provides a business information service in each of its nine branch libraries. If you are a member of any of these branch libraries in Leitrim you can access two very useful databases. They are www.vision-net.ie and www.lexisnexis.com. You might say what on earth are these? These two databases are very useful tools for the business person, budding entrepreneur or researcher.

Lexisnexis is the world’s largest collection of news and business information available free at your local library. You can find up to date facts and figures on any subject in minutes from Irish newspapers, including the Irish Times, Irish Independent, Irish Examiner and local papers. You can also obtain global facts from International newspapers including The Times, The New York Times, the Financial Times, USA Today, Le Monde, Sydney Morning Herald, Warsaw Times. You have access to information from company and executive databases and retrieve information from business and trade journals such as The Economist, Harvard Business Reviews, Forbes Fortune and more.

In these recessionary times, if you are looking for a job it is helpful to research the company you are applying to. You can do this and more by using Vision-net free at your local library. Vision-net is useful for researching a potential employer, preparing a business plan, researching industry sectors, writing a thesis, finding Irish and UK company reports, researching company directors, looking at industry statistics and trends, financial accounts, trading histories and industrial and business links.

Be at the cutting edge – use your local library!
Carrigallen Library opening hours - Monday and Wednesday 2:00pm to 8:pm and Saturday 10:00am to 1:00pm.

Kellogg’s and an expert panel of judges will select a club, community or college finalist from each province in Ireland and a public vote will decide the ultimate winner. The 4 finalists will feature on RTE television and each will be mentored by one of the Kellogg’s Field of Dreams celebrity champions: Ireland rugby player Rob Kearney and RTE presenters Marty Morrissey, Tracy Piggott and Jacqui Hurley. 3 runners up will each win €10,000 worth of professional groundsmanship with expert advice on making the most of their prize.

For the chance to win the Kellogg’s Field of Dreams, each club collects tokens from the special packs of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut or Kellogg’s Crunchy Nut Feast. If your club has 149 members, collect 500 tokens, if your club has 150 – 249 members, collect 700 tokens and if your club has 250 members or more, collect 900 tokens. The tokens should be given to your club’s Kellogg’s Field of Dreams ambassador. Your ambassador will create your club’s entry online using videos, photos and anything else that might help entrants make it all the way to the final. Four provincial finalists will be chosen in August 2010 with the winners decided by public vote in November.

Kellogg’s wants to get clubs, schools and the wider community involved in Kellogg’s Field of Dreams. It’s a great way to bring people together and to foster community feeling. Carrigallen/Drumeela Active Age Group

The Active Age Group enjoyed a two day break in Breffy House Hotel, Castlebar recently. It could be classified as an educational tour from start to finish. Strokestown House was the first port of call. A tour of the partially restored house, the walled gardens and Famine Museum where they encountered the most tragic time in our history and its effects on the people living on the estate. After refreshments they headed west to Castlebar. The following morning the group travelled to Providence Wollen Mills and Heritage Centre, Foxford. The founding of the Mills by Agnes Morrogh-Bernard, Sr Arsenius of the Sisters of Charity and the Sisters' contribution to the life of the people ravaged by famine is remembered and appreciated by audio-visual storytelling. The afternoon was spent visiting the historic, beautifully restored Westport House home to the Browne and Burke gentry. Croagh Patrick was viewed from its lower levels to round off the day. The following morning it was time to hit for home, taking in the National Museum of Country Life in Turlough Park, Castlebar, which introduces you to the concepts of Folklife and Folklore. Therein one can explore the lives and times of our rural ancestors who lived during the mid-19th to mid-20th centuries.
A very fulfilling and interesting break was had by all.

Seamus Wins Best Actor Award
The final night of the 2010 RTE Drama Festival dawned and there was an air of tension as the crowd thronged the room in the Radisson Blu Hotel in Athlone. Michael Ryan, Nationwide was compère for the night. As the adjudicator Tom Doherty took to the podium the anticipation was great as he carried the envelope that would determine the fate of all present. Congratulations to Seamus O’Rourke on winning the RTE All Ireland Drama Festival Trophy for Best Actor for his role as John in Shining City by Corn Mill Theatre Company. Seamus so deserved this award as he is a fine and talented actor, and he had brilliant performances through out the run of this play on the drama circuit and at home. He is a worthy winner. Also, congratulations go to Tommy Sharkey for being nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role as Laurence, not bad for his ten minutes or so on stage. Congratulations also to the director Gus Ward, the remaining cast Patricia Ledwith and Ronan Ward, crew of Shining City for their award winning performances throughout and for reaching the all Ireland. It is indeed a great honour. Well done and congratulations to the overall winners Silken Thomas Players, County Kildare with their production of The History Boys by Alan Bennett.

Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age
The AGM of Carrigallen and Drumeela Active Age Group was held recently in the Health Centre, Carrigallen. Margaret McCartin attended, representing Leitrim Development Company, and presided over the election of Eileen Ward (Chairperson); Ann Harte (Treasurer); Elizabeth Mulligan (Secretary) and Valerie Elsegood (PRO). During the year the Group had taken part in a wide variety of activities – including charcoal art lessons, first aid, gentle exercises, and visits to the Corn Mill Theatre – as well as going out and about in Leitrim and surrounding counties. The short break to Kilkenny was a great success. Everyone enjoyed the visit to the former home, and resting place, of Patrick Kavanagh, but the trip to Mountmellick Embroidery Museum, taking in a whisky distillery on the way, was maybe top of the list! The Group certainly lived up to its ‘active’ image when a bus load of members took part in a Ten Pin Bowling session at Longford last year – a second session recently made sure that everyone continued to polish up their skills! The Group is fine-tuning details of forthcoming trips to Croke Park and the Titanic Exhibition in Dublin, as well as planning another short break – this time to Castlebar. On closing the meeting Margaret commented that the group was certainly vibrant, and complimented the Officers for their hard work. Next meeting will be held on Monday 17th May in the Health Centre, starting at 7:30pm. There will be a guest speaker.

Sadness at the Passing of Former Drumbreanlis NS Students
Deep sadness was felt over a wide area when the death of Vincent Gray, Bredagh, Carrigallen was announced. Vincent worked for most of his life with a local builders’ providers firm and he had an excellent knowledge of building materials. He was a highly skilled machine operator as well, with a keen interest in house building. Everyone remembers Vincent as a very popular, quiet spoken and good-humoured husband and father who will be sadly missed. He was looking forward to the Drumbreanlis Reunion to which he donated generously and being a former student had a great interest in the occasion. The Drumbreanlis NS Reunion Committee send their deepest sympathy to his wife Kathleen, his daughters Fiona and Yvonne and his brothers and sisters, extended family and many friends.

There was widespread regret with the news of the death of Noel Murray in London recently. He was one of a large family, all of whom grew up in Aughavore, Carrigallen and attended Drumbreanlis National School. Noel was a successful businessman in England where he specialised in furniture removal. He always visited Carrigallen when moving furniture to Ireland. People who knew him well said his heart never left Aughavore where he always returned to visit his brothers and his late mother. He intended joining in the celebrations this year of Drumbreanlis NS Reunion and he sent a generous donation for it. The committee passed a vote of sympathy at their last meeting to his brother Peter, who is Treasurer of the RU, and to Noel’s wife Phyllis, daughter Claire and son Adrian in London. To his brothers and sister and extended family and friends we send our deepest sympathy.

Committee Member Bereaved

Sincere sympathy is extended to our esteemed Drumbreanlis NS committee member Mrs Anna B McCabe, on the death of her son Brian. Brian died in Coventry where he lived and he was laid to rest after Mass in Newtownforbes Church on 9th March 2010. His remains were interred in Newtownforbes graveyard. Anna B was a teacher in Drumbreanlis NS and the committee sends their heartfelt sympathy to her and son Declan and daughter Anita and their family and friends.

Vincent Gray

There was widespread sadness in Carrigallen and surrounding areas when the news spread about the sudden death of Vincent Gray, Bredagh, Carrigallen on Wednesday 24th March 2010. Vincie, as he was fondly known, was born in the neighbouring townland of Errew. He moved to Bredagh after his marriage to his wife Kathleen Smith, Skealon, Doogarry, Co Cavan in 1981. Vincie was a hard working man all his life and was capable of turning his hands to any job, spending most of his working years as a lorry driver. He was a skilled builder having built three homes for his family and expertly done all the works attached to such a venture. Recently, he turned his creative ability to producing many fine pieces of art painting which now hangs in many a home. His wife Kathleen and two daughters Fiona and Yvonne were his pride and joy and this was very evident in the warmth shown in the family home. During his recent illness, his wife and daughters gave a professional level of care which no establishment could provide and this was done lovingly. Vincie had a great sense of humour and a big smile. A work colleague of his who had known him for twenty-six years said that in all those years they had never had a row or a falling out. He was a gentle giant and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Sympathy is extended to his wife Kathleen; daughters Fiona and Yvonne; brothers Tommy, Errew, Eamonn, Beaghmore and Seamus, Errew; sisters Kathleen Smith, London, England, Madge Finlayson, Glasgow, Scotland and Bernadette Grimes, Drumconlevan, Carrigallen; sisters-in-law Eleanor and Aine; brothers-in-law John Finlayson and Vincent Grimes; aunt-in-law Mrs Nash; nephews and nieces; relatives and friends. May he Rest in Peace. The removal of remains and funeral took place following con-celebrated Mass in St Mary’s Church, Carrigallen on Saturday 27 March. Chief celebrant was Fr Dennis Murray PP, Carrigallen and the con-celebrants were Fr. Kevin O’Rourke, Sudan; Fr Pat Farrelly CC Kildallan and Fr Ultan McGoohan CC Cavan. The funeral was very large and representative and burial took place in the adjoining cemetery.

Molly Masterson

The death occurred of Molly Masterson late of Cornafest, Carrigallen on 19th November 2009 in Wellingborough, Northampton, England after a short illness. Her late father was a brilliant ballad singer and step dancer and he used to accompany his family during their performances. Molly and her late brother Eddie were excellent step dancers while her brother Tommy excelled at ballad singer and flute playing. Molly emigrated to London approximately sixty years ago where she worked, married and reared her family. Indeed the area she loved so much will be much the poorer from her passing as she visited her old homestead regularly. May she Rest in Peace. She was predeceased by her son Lenny. Sympathy is extended to her daughter Maureen, grandchildren Selina, Karl and Michelle; sister Sally, California, USA; sisters-in-law Noreen and Bridie; great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a large family circle. Donal Donnelly

It was with great regret that the news of the death of actor Donal Donnelly, which occurred in America on Tuesday 5th January 2010 was received here in Carrigallen. Many remember Donal starring in John McGahern's film Korea. The bar scenes were filmed in Charley Farrellys' Bar on Main Street in the summer of 1994. Readers may recall that the Main Street was closed during the filming and the cast would have included many from the Corn Mill Theatre Group, along with some other local people. Those who worked with the late Donal found him to be a gentle and unassuming man. Donal was originally born in England in 1932 but was raised in Dublin in a prominent Fianna Fáil family, where his brother Michael has served as a local Councilor and served a term as Lord Major of Dublin. Donal had a successful career on the stage in Dublin, London and the US. Following his move to the US he earned fame and acclaim for his performances in films such as The Godfather and The Dead. But his first love was theatre and it was for one such performance as Private Gar in the World Premier of Brian Friel's Philadelphia Here I Come that Donal was nominated for a Tony Award. We were privileged here in Carrigallen to have hosted such a talented actor of both stage and film, and can only hope he enjoyed his time here in Carrigallen. May he Rest in Peace.

Historic Building Ceases To Be

At the end of every year we look back on the many changes that occurred during the year. For a few years we had got used to recording new homes and buildings standing where previously green fields or vacant sites were. The year 2009 recorded the disappearance of the old building on the Mohill Road (formally Scordan Road) known as the Court House dating back over three centuries. The building was home to Court proceedings under British rule and for a while to the Sinn Féin Courts and following the establishment of the Irish Free State, continued in operation until more comfortable accommodation was found on Main Street, before the Court’s area was changed to Arva, Co Cavan. Locals see it as a badge of honour that the people of Carrigallen were of such a law abiding nature that insufficient business was provided as to merit a Court for Carrigallen alone. In any event the building which had played host to Court proceedings during the most eventful period of Irish history ceases to be. Unfortunately despite a significant re-construction job some years back, the building had deteriorated with structural and foundation problems beyond repair. The owner Pat Masterson Snr., having received the best professional advice available was left with no option other than have it demolished in the interest of public safety and so alas, with a few swipes of a modern machine a little piece of old Carrigallen disappeared.

Musical at the Corn Mill Theatre
The Corn Mill Theatre Group is performing their own unique adaptation of the musical Fiddler on the Roof in the Corn Mill Theatre, Carrigallen on Thursday 7th, Friday 8th and Saturday 9th January 2010. Fiddler on the Roof is set in the small Jewish village of Anatevka, Russia, in 1905 and is concerned primarily with the efforts of Tevye, a dairyman, his wife, Golde, and their three daughters to cope with their harsh existence under Tsarist rule.
