Death of Well Known Anglers

The people of Carrigallen were shocked to hear the sad news of the recent deaths of two English men that were regular visitors to Carrigallen. They were Paul Magrath and Brian Cooper, both of whom were well-known anglers, having taken up the sport of fishing at a young age. Brian and Paul socialised with the local people and were always well received in the pubs and shops. The business people of the area knew them by their first names and so well they might, because it is forty years since Brian and Paul first came to Carrigallen with friends to stay at Dolan's of church Street. In later years their holidays were spent in allendale House with the Murray family. In 2008, Paul and Brian were presented with Failte Ireland certificates in recognition of their dedication to the sport of fishing in Ireland. They will be sadly missed by their many friends in Carrigallen and sympathy is extended to both their families in Manchester. May their gentle souls rest in peace.

Mysterious Ways
The New Theatre presents Gonzo Theatre Companies 'Mysterious Ways' by Philip Doherty (PJ O'Connor Radio Drama Award winner) and directed by Kevin O'Connor. The music is written and performed by Robbie Perry. Kevin O’Connor is a drama facilitator, theatre director and educational drama facilitator and consultant working between Limerick, Belfast, Dundalk, Leitrim and Cavan. Since 1998 Kevin has taught and facilitated for a number of educational institutes nationally including University of Limerick, Betty Ann Norton Theatre School, Cavan Institute and Dundalk Institute of Technology. Kevin also acted as Artistic director of Cavan Youth Drama, a network of sixteen groups located around the County of Cavan. Kevin has a passion for drama and believes in its power to change and transform, he has used Theatre of the Oppressed methodologies and techniques in border areas most notably in Belfast’s Falls and Shankill areas. Kevin is currently working on a Cross Border project with the over 15 year olds in the Community Centre, Carrigallen. Apparition or hallucination? In 1879 Our Lady appeared on the gable end off a wall in Knock. A native of the village believes they were all “off their faces on magic mushies”.

Mysterious Ways is a comical but poignant look at religion, spiritually and the ironies of life. The play takes the listener from Knock to the sun of Africa via the narration of Joseph Moran, who undergoes a spiritual revolution that changes him from a “good for nothing” who is all “me, me, me” to a different outlook on life. It takes an irreverent look at some aspects of religion but the hero is ultimately redeemed thanks to life’s odd way of enforcing change on people. Mysterious Ways is running from Tuesday 29 September to Saturday 3rd October in The New Theatre, East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin. The show starts at 8:00pm nightly and admission is €12.50/€10 concession. To book phone (01) 6703361 or emailto: info@newtheatre.com

MARGARET OF NEW ORLEANS SPIRIT OPENS ARMS TO VISITORS
The story of Margaret of New Orleans begins to spread to young and old, and that was all very evident recently with the arrival of a group of tourists lead by Celtic Balladeer Danny Flaherty who visited Carrigallen and Tully. The group of sixteen were met by the Margaret of New Orleans Tully Committee and Brendan Reilly took a section of the group fishing and experience the tranquillity of our lake lands. The group were entertained by Leitrim Youth Theatre Company, Carrigallen with their production of “Our Story of Margaret of New Orleans” written and directed by Maura Williamson and performed by a cast of eighteen. A member of the audience commented that he was taken on to the stage and travelled Margaret’s journey during the production. The play is enhanced by six songs written by Tony Fahy and beautifully sang by Mary Harte, Ailish Connolly, and Reichelle Paler. Danny Flaherty was so impressed by the production and speaking through tears felt that a bigger audience should experience this production and talked about possibly finding a way to have the youth theatre perform in New Orleans. Aoife Tierney on behalf of the youth Theatre presented Danny with a piece of Leitrim Crystal.

Danny very quickly put on his own stage costume, and everyone moved to the Kilbrackan Arms Hotel where Danny took to the stage again to entertain the audience. The youth theatre members joined in and did some Irish dancing for the visitors. Danny was joined by Ailish Connolly, Fr. Denis Murray, Martin Gaffney and his daughter who complimented the visitor’s performance, and added to a wonderful night of entertainment. Posters around the community read “Meitheal at Tully” and the sunshone, and crowds travelled to a very enjoyable cultural day in the field beside where Margaret's restored cottage now sits in the peace of shady trees and a running stream. Many newly elected politicians and local business men flashed their tans and took to the ducking chair all in the spirit of fundraising to continue the restoration of Margaret’s birthplace. Old craftwork and traditions were very evident on the field that day. The live sculpting by Martin Doyle of Margaret of New Orleans and two children in her arms was quite an attraction. Free bouncing castle activities were given by Frank Sheridan. Beautiful food was served and many volunteers working away quietly made this weekend a memorable success. As the dark clouds ascended on that evening the group gathered in The Kilbrackan Arms for a session of music, song and dance. The session was lead by students of Padraic Lynch School of music. The New Orleans group returned with a strong sense of tradition and culture which this area so organically presents on all occasions.

The Tully Committee who are working so hard would like to thank most sincerely all the volunteers who helped over the weekend. Those who donated financial or otherwise. Also to Leitrim Youth Theatre Company Carrigallen for their entertaining production, and the Corn Mill Theatre for their support. In a strange way Margaret of New Orleans footsteps are been revisited here by the support and generosity of the people of our community.

PARK DEVELOPMENT
As everyone is aware at this stage that the park has undergone rapid changes over the last number of years. The new dressing rooms and gym complex has just been recently completed and this fine job is an example of what voluntary work can bring about, from ticket selling to maintenance work on the grounds and volunteers working on the new construction. Many people have done great work to get the grounds to its current state and we thank them all sincerely. However, while plenty has been done, there is more to do. The training ground is due to be completed this summer. For this job to be completed we will need a helping hand once again. Lights have to be erected and the grounds need to be prepared for topsoil and seeding. Any members who are willing and able to lend their skills to finish the job are asked to contact the Chairman John Reilly at (086) 9192000.

DR LOMAN CUSACK
The death occurred after a short illness on 21st April 2009 at St Vincent's University Hospital, of Dr Loman Cusack, Snndymount and late of Goatstown, Dublin and Carrigallen, Co Leitrim. Loman was son of the late Dr Matt and Una Cusack who practiced medicine in Carrigallen for over 30 years. He was born in Bailieboro, Co Cavan Loman came to Carrigallen with his parents and family in 1939 and attended the local and Drumbreanlis National schools before going on to Terenure College, Dublin. His sole ambition as a young man was to follow in his father's footsteps as a medical practitioner. He entered the Royal College of Surgeons to study medicine from where he graduated in 1956. Having worked in a number of hospitals throughout the country in various positions and gaining vast experience, he decided to set up practice in Goatstown, Co Dublin. During his many years in practice he was widely acclaimed as a wonderful diagnostician for which many patients were eternally grateful. His patients came first and he always made himself available to them day and night. He won his patients' trust and was always re-assuring when necessary.

Dr Loman was appointed Medical Director for the Royal Hospital in Donnybrook, a position he held for two years before taking up a similar post at Clonskeagh Hospital. Despite having a busy practice he dedicated himself to the work of this hospital with special care for the elderly and terminally ill. He was a firm beliver in the dignity of his patients here, irrespective of age or illness and that was a priority of his. Whilst medicine was his first love, he was in his own right a military historian. The major events and happenings in both World War One and Two were well known to him and any queries about the Normandy Landings, Pearl Harbour or such would get a detailed and accurate response.

Loman retired in 1995 and went to live in Sandymount with his devoted wife and best friend, Pauline. He is survived by his wife Pauline, daughters Ann, Michelle McShane, Adrienne Guckian, son Loman, sons-ln-law, daughter-in-law and his devoted grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Mella Blake, Brona Coffey, brothers Matt, J.E.F. and Dr Barry. He is pre-deceased by his brother Fintan and sister Una McAllister. Finally, it can be said that Loman will be sadly missed but he will be remembered as having enjoyed a distinguished career as a medical practitioner who was renowned for his gentle and caring bedside manner.

LEITRIM YOUTH THEATRE COMPANY TELLS THE STORY OF "MARGARET OF NEW ORLEANS" THROUGH THEIR EYES
Leitrim Youth Theatre Company head into their sixth production. This time their production tells the story of "the Angel of the Delta", the Bread Woman of New Orleans, the Celebrated Margaret, Margaret of Tully, Mother Margaret, and Margaret of New Orleans, all appropriate titles indeed for an extraordinory unique woman, who was born in Tully, Carrigallen. She emigrated with her father, mother and two other siblings to Baltimore at the tender age of five in 1818. Speaking with Maura Williamson, Leader, Director and writer of this play, assisted by the cast has said it has been one of the most challenging pieces of work the company have worked on to date. History of people who lived a life time ago can be a boring subject to young people, and maintaining their interest and staying with the method of devising a play was a difficult task, but we all took a deep breath and a sigh of relief as the final script, (still a work in progress) became the end product and indeed an exciting nights entertainment for all who attend is guaranteed, as the company head into the final weeks of rehearsals.

Youth drama is not always about performing on stage, and if the workshops are in the hands of good leaders, the work can take members on a challenging journey that life may take them on in years to come. Two members of LYTC Carrigallen, Aaron McManus assistant lighting technician, and Daniel Mimna sound technician are busy touring the amateur drama festival with "Kevin's Bed" directed by Killian McGuinness and the Corn Mill Theatre, another side to what youth drama is about.

This production has a strong community feel about it, and with the seed of Margaret's story been sown by many previously in this community like former National School teacher Joe Doonan, Raymond Hackett, Michael Reilly, John Joe Rudden, and the Tully Committee of The Margaret of New Orleans project. On this production musician and song writer Tony Fahy has written five songs to add to the artistic value of this production. John McCartin, Brian Mulligan and Mary Harte are also adding original music to this production. Many strands of an organic artistic community all coming together with Leitrim Youth Theatre Company to enhance this production, and in the lines of the play "Margaret's spirit still lives on".If you are familiar with Margaret of New Orleans or if you are interested in hearing about a very extradinary woman come along and support Leitrim Youth Theatre Carrigallen performing at The Corn Mill Theatre, Carrigallen on Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th April at 8.30pm. Booking at 049 4339612. The Company will also perform a day time show on Thursday at 12 noon for the pupils from the local Vocational School, Carrigallen. LYTC Carrigallen is funded by Leitrim County Council and Arts Council as part of the wider Leitrim Youth Theatre Company programme which includes groups in Manorhamilton and Carrick-on-Shannon. CALAMITY JANE

Killeshandra Community Drama Group present Calamity Jane adapted by Ronald Hanmer and Phil Park from the stage play by Charles K Freeman after the Warner Bros. film written by James O'Hanlon. This musical western is directed by Carol Ann Farrelly and musical director Ciaran Tackney. Carol Ann Farrelly is one of the founder members of the Killeshandra Group and also herself a talented musician, has waited for a long time for this opportunity to direct a musical. Carol Ann chose this musical as a personal favourite with great music, a big cast and a real challenge for her newly acquired skills. She has recently graduated from NUI Maynooth with a Diploma in Arts, Drama and Theatre Studies and before that a Certificate in Community Drama at Dundalk IT. Carol Ann has previously directed the group in the One Act drama circuit and also acted in the groups' first production of "The Factory Girls". It was this first production that enjoyed so much community admiration and support, that has spurred the group on and swelled the numbers to be able to stage this production of "Calamity Jane". Calamity Jane is a musical western set in 1876, depicting the eventful lives of the inhabitants of Deadwood City, Dakota Territory. The hub for all things in Deadwood is the Golden Garter….The cast is made up of some well known talents from the music scene in Co Cavan, the local community of Killeshandra and the surrounds. All cast have received vocal training workshops with Ciaran Tackney who is working with Carol Ann as musical director on this production. Ciaran and his musical ensemble of a 6 piece band will lead the music and the story will unfold through lyrics and dialect. Ciaran is a great talent who strives for perfection, a music teacher for many years. Indeed some of the cast of Calamity Jane would be past pupils of his. The show is opening in the Corn Mill Theatre and Arts Centre, Carrigallen on Friday, 13th March and running Saturday 14th, Sunday 15th and again on Thursday 19th, Friday 20th, Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd March at 8.30pm sharp. PIKE COMPETITION
On Sunday, 1st February Carrigallen Pike Anglers held an open boat competition on Gulladoo Lake, Carrigallen. This event was to raise funds for the local Trout Club towards the restocking of Calloughs Lake. The event proved a great success with forty boats participating on what was a very cold day. It was to prove a difficult day to catch pike due to the levels of fresh water from the previous week, however thirty-five were caught and released. The results on the day were as follows: The heaviest pike was caught by Barry Darby and weighed in at 9lbs 3ozs was good enough to take top prize of €1,000. Mattie Grey, Aughnacliffe was second with 9lbs to take €500 and third went to Longford angler, Joe McDermott 8lbs 14ozs taking €250. Pauric Cunningham and Eamon Craven from Athlone won the pool prize of €370 with 21lbs 3ozs. Mike Flanagan, Sunday World Correspondent from Mullingar picked up the mystery weight prize of a lovely new fishing rod with a pike of 5lbs 8ozs. The presentation was held in Pat Masterson's Bar where Pat provided finger licking food and other refreshments. The Club would like to thank the following people who provided sponsorship for the competition - Pat Masterson; Ann McGovern, Angling Carrigallen; Cloughbally Angling Centre, Enniskillen; Terry Mann, Angling Jamestown; Mick Flanagan, Sunday World Correspondent; Donal Cadden, Kilbracken Arms Hotel; Thomas Tierney, John Lockhart; Seamie McManus; Michael Hackett; Johnny Ffye and Alan Taylor. The Club would also like to thank Tom Duffy and Tony Flaherty for the use of their lands and premises for launching the boats and to Danny Calders, Arva for his assistence with Tony Flaherty. The next competition is some time away, probably in October and the continuation of the Trout Club depends on people supporting this competition. We would therefore thank all the people who have participated so far and encourage as many others as possible to take part in the future. We also wish the water users a very safe time on the water as the weather improves over the coming months.
